I purchased this handset as an upgrade to my Nokia 7600. which had been extremely reliable and a great phone all round. I wanted the latest, greatest piece of kit to utlilise at work as well as play so the best O2 could offer me was the very latest XDA IIi.
As I opened the pack I was struck by the gleaming sophistication of this device and could not wait to begin testing it.
Unfortunately it was not long after starting it that the cracks began to emerge. I received my first lockup very quickly and from this moment on it was very much a case of finding it locked up once in a while and having to restart the system using the soft reboot gap at the bottom of the phone.
The worst lockups occurred when using Tom Tom 5, which O2 have just acknowledged has an issue with this handset, which it should not have. Tom Tom are investigating.
When it was working it was good and really helped with PDF viewing for my work but it was so frustrating to return to the device to make a call and find it had hung.
The issue with these XDAs/PDAs is that they do not have a hard drive so everything new has to be loaded directly into RAM. This means if corruption occurs in the RAM then the only way to correct it is by turning the device off, taking out the battery and then waiting for the RAM to clear. It is then possible to restart and reinstall all apps but you will also lose your contacts. This happened with the sat nav software a few times and rendered the device unusable until cleared.
The option to back up applications and contacts to the storage card is always there but it seems from the forums that the XDA IIi is a bit selective about which cards it is happy to work with normally. Note: It will not reject the card and seems fine but then lockups will occur increasingly due to issues sourcing data off the card in a timely manner.
So basically my first foray into the world of pocket PCs has not been a pleasant one and O2 have accepted a return of the device and will send me a different handset. From what I can gather this bit of kit is a touch too unreliable to be used consistently and having stranded me in the middle of London last Friday due to a Tom Tom freeze, which would not correct itself, I had absolutely had enough.
