At last, the Olympics are upon us. Great show so far put on by Sydney. GO AUSSIE, GO AUSSIE, GO ! And they are too. Just magic in the pool with "Thorpedo" Ian Thorp winning a grab handful of medals in the first four days.
As always USA are getting their fair share of medals, as befits the top sporting nation in the world. But hey, come on now, it's about time you felt sorry for us Brits. We're now up to EIGHT medals.....wooooooohooooooo! Four in the cycling, one shooting, a canoe slalom silver, judo and another one, I think just for turning up !
Swimming, well, we had supposedly a few medal chances, but they've all come and gone. Steve Parry was going to win gold, he came 6th in the final yesterday, the best we've done in the pool so far! It really annoyed me this morning when we had two guys "in with medals chances". They came 18th and 20th and didn't even qualify for the semis! We had Jamie King in the Breaststroke, 3rd Olympics for her, should make the final said the pundits. She finished 7th and last in her heat, swam over 3 seconds SLOWER than her PB! She was interviewed just afterwards, she wasn't too upset, "I did my best". RUBBISH. If you are at the Olympics, an event you have been working towards for 4 years at least, you MUST be at your peak. Swim a PB to get to the semis, another PB to make the final. Either way, swim a PB, then and only then you can say "I did my best" None of the Brits have even been near their peak. Are they just there to party? BRITS, As John McEnroe would say, WE ARE THE PITS.
GREAT, Today we won a Gold in the clay pigeon shooting (whisper it, c l a y p i g e o n s h o o t i n g) and a good silver in the Canoe Slalom (by Paul Ratcliffe who is world ranked #1!) . He, at least, did say he was disappointed at getting the silver. He'd set his sights on Gold, made a couple of mistakes in his first run, but was determined to get something. That showed guts, so good on him.
Things.....can only get better.....! But there is the athletics still to come......
Oh yes and our hockey teams have won a total of NONE games between them. The men lost 8-1 to Pakistan yesterday ! And Soccer? I don't think we entered.
BUT there's still the Athletics to come......
And, of course, we always get Boxing medals and that should start soon. Our team (if you can call it that) of TWO boxers ( are they joking ?) should bring back a vast haul of medals..NOT!
BUT there's still the Athletics, we might get a few medals, but not as many as some optimists predict. We are just a backwoods nation I'm afraid. And to think we were hoping that these Olympics would have been held in Manchester...ha ha. Make a Choice Sydney, Manchester..??
Well with the increase in different sports like Ballroom Dancing (??) we are hoping that next Olympics they will include "Synchronised falling over drunk and being sick all over your pal's new shoes" Gold for GB for sure.
Here's me sitting, ever hopefully, in front of the TV, waiting patiently for GB to start the Olympics.
