Odd Thomas is one of Dean Koontz's more heavily moralised horror thrillers, but is ... more
nonetheless charming and terrifying. Odd is an adolescent on the brink of adulthood who sees dead people and has a worryingly precise moral sense; the police chief of the small town of Pico Mundo--little world--relies on him heavily. Hardly has the book opened before a dead teenager leads Odd to her killer--and we are given to understand that this is the sort of thing that happens all the time. He does not just see the dead, however; he sees the thrill-seeking dark spirits that hang around unpleasant events, and he notices, on this particular day, that there are a lot more of them about than usual. Odd is haunted by dreams of dead bowling-alley staff and he wonders whether this might just be the day when the bowling-alley massacre takes place. The tone of voice here is almost saccharine, almost sinister--Odd and his friends and his sweetheart are vivid, cute and self-righteous. This is a bizarrely paced thriller because it follows the vagaries of an eccentric with his own ways of investigating things--it is as odd as its hero's name. --Roz Kaveney

Advantages: Different and unsual thriller Disadvantages: None
Having finished my last book slightly quicker than I had anticipated I was left without a new book to read, which just can't happen so I had to have a good rake through the huge pile of books we have in the house. After some time reminiscing sat in the middle of a mountain of books I came across a book that my husband had read and enjoyed but I'd never managed to get around to reading. The book "OddThomas" is by DeanKoontz an author whose books I had never read before and although I had indeed heard of him I knew nothing about him.
DeanKoontz is the author of many international number one bestsellers. He was born and raised in Pennsylvania. A well loved thriller writer who now lives with his wife in California.
We are introduced to the main character "OddThomas" from the start of the book. Odd is a loveable 21 year old who ...
Advantages: A glimpe inside the world of Koontz. Disadvantages: Poor reviews.
Introduction
^^^^^^^^^^
Writing this review is like putting on a comfortable slipper after wearing stout shoes. Don?t get me wrong, I still love to increase my knowledge of books by reading more obscure authors and exploring new genres, but I still have a love of fantasy and horror and nobody does it better than DeanKoontz.
I have read one review by Patriacat, who unfortunately has left Ciao, so literally pounced on this as soon as I found it in my local library. As much as I would love to buy books as soon as they come out, my benefits don?t allow such purchases. So, without further ado, let?s take a look inside the mind of OddThomas, one of Mr Koontz?s most unusual characters to date.
The Plot.

Advantages: Quick read and not too taxing Disadvantages: plot holes
this, out of the whole book was the bit that did it for me. Now that is full blooded horror in my mind.
The fly leaf of the book quotes ?DeanKoontz is one of the most acclaimed and popular authors of modern times. In OddThomas he has created a character whose unique voice will live for generations to come.?
Oh no he wont. He will fill a few hours when you want a book that doesn?t require a great deal of thought but his unique voice has almost disappeared now as I?ve closed the book.
Although I found Odd a strange and sensitive young man and I learned to like his girlfriend Stormy along with him, he wont leave any lasting impression.
The book is published by Harper Collins and will set you back £17.99 for the hardback.
Mine came from the library, so nil cost but I have to give it back.
I've given it four stars but ...
