An End Has A Start - Editors

Advantages: Lyrically strong and musically very promising.
Disadvantages: It just isnt as great as their first album.Songs start firey but fizzle out too soon.

With their brilliant debut album The Back Room, it was clear that Editor's had the musical gravitas to craft another equelly compelling second album. But in my opinion, they didn't. For those of you that haven't heard Editor's then their sound is something like Interpol (vocally) and are definitely neo-post-punk musically. Guitars surge at the beginning of most songs aiming for something breathtakingly brilliant...trouble is that they never quite seem to get there. The songs some how begin to slump after the initial promise they offer. The lyrics are still thought provoking and moody, delivered perfectly by the direct and edgy vocals and the music is definitely better than most bands of a similar genre but for me it just doesn't quite cut the mustard. Especially when I am certain that this band could do so much better. But having ...

The Beano Annual 2009

Advantages: Still got the classsical Beano characters, it only cost me 97p
Disadvantages: Some of the stories seemed quite adult for a childrens comic

I was on Amazon recently and needed to buy an extra little something to make my order to over £5 so that I could get free delivery, I saw ?The Beano Annual 2009? for 97p so I decided to get it! I used to be in the Beano club when I was younger, and had a subscription to the Beano magazine. I have to say though that I haven?t read a beano in about 15 years! I was quite intrigued to see if Beano had changed at all since I had read it last. The annual is a hardback book, which is around A4 size. On the front cover is a picture of Dennis the Menace and Gnasher reeking havoc on Beano town, along with some Beano Town residents either cheering them on or booing. When you open the book, I quite liked the designs used on the inside of the cover on the back and front. They have pencil drawn sketches of the characters in different stages ...

The Back Room - Editors

Advantages: 2 great tracks - Blood, and Munich
Disadvantages: Very disappointing tracks

This debut album by West Midlands band 'The Editors' was pretty disappointing, despite a number of critics claiming otherwise. MUNICH, and BLOOD are nice songs, and are a bit like 'Slow Hands' by Interpol. It's indie, but with a bit of an 80's 'New Order' / 'Joy Division' guitar sound coupled with 'Interpol' Both tracks seem to follow the same musical recipe, and this is something I'll get onto later. They are more or less copies of each other, with a catchy guitar in the background as the singer repeats the same lyrics over and over. With these 2 tracks it works well, and they are definitely worth a listen. But the spark runs out by the 4th track. There is nothing as good as MUNICH or BLOOD on the rest of the album. The other tracks are really quite boring and lack any catchy tune. Something was missing, and I think it was ...
