Complete Radiance Liquid Foundation by Oil of Olay provides light, even coverage with SPF 15, Olay moisture and oil-absorbing powders. The complete Radiance range seems to be quite new and is currently (April 2001) on promotion and has £2 off the recommended price which I think is around £8. When I tried it out on the back of my hand I was amazed at how smoothly it went on and how silky it felt – so I bought some.

Under normal circumstances I rarely wear foundation because I have never found one which both looks and feels good on me – that is until now. For the first time I have found a foundation which gives me a smooth flawless complexion and actually does seem to generate a kind of radiance.

To be honest I haven’t a clue why or how it works so well. I checked on the Olay web site and although it is listed as a product on the US site at least, the pages with information about it don’t seem to work or haven’t been completed yet so this was no help at all. However, I think it is a powder foundation which is comes in liquid form and this effectively means that it is not necessary to use powder with it. I am just so used to putting powder on that I still used a bit. The coverage is absolutely brilliant and only a very little is needed so I think it will prove to be very good value.

The information on the product itself says:

• For normal, dry, oily or combination skin.

•Skin compatability dermatologically tested.

•Non comedogenic - This had me baffled but I have now found out that this simply means it won’t clog the pores.

•Suitable for sensitive skin.

In other words it is suitable for all skin types. My skin is typically aging skin, very sensitive and tending toward dry and I have used this foundation regularly now for a couple of weeks without a problem.

Other information given on the product:

•UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum Protection – SPF 15 (SPF means Sun Protection Factor)

Because I rarely wear makeup during the day I didn’t think this was particularly beneficial for me but having used the product I think it will be. Because I burn very easily I always have to wear a sun screen in summer but this foundation is much nicer to wear than a cream.

People are more aware these days of the harmful effects of UV on the skin and therefore I think it is very useful to have a sunscreen in a foundation.

The active ingredient is Titanium dioxide which is what is known as a "physical block", meaning it deflects the sun’s UV rays before they can penetrate the skin. Because of titanium dioxide's ability to give total protection, it has broad spectrum blocking capabilities that include UVB, UVA, UVC and infrared rays.

However, it will not give protection if you are out in the sun for any length of time because it is usually recommended that a very fair skinned person should reapply SPF 15 every 1-2 hours, and a person with more tolerant skin will need to reapply the same sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

• Nourishing Olay Moisture
• All Day Lasting Colour
• Oil Absorbing Powders

I am a long term fan of Olay (or Oil of Ulay as it was) for moisturisers and regularly use both moisturiser and shower stuff so I trust them to be able to perform in this department.

The colour does last all day but perhaps the range is a little limited. I think there are 10 colours but not all of them were available when I bought mine but the one I chose, light natural 10, works very well for me.

~ ~ ~The Container ~ ~ ~

My only criticism of the product is of its container. There is nothing wrong with its size - It is a slim compact container about 4” long which fits easily into a makeup bag. But I don’t like the top. It is has a one twist to open function which, for some reason or another, I can’t get on with. Another problem is that because it is a liquid the area around the top becomes coated in the make-up and is a bit messy.

~ ~ ~ The Ingredients ~ ~ ~

As with all cosmetics the list of ingredients sounds horrific but I have listed them in case anyone knows that they are allergic to any of them.

Aqua (Water), Cyclopentasiloxane, Titanium Dioxide, Glycerin, Nylon-12, Sodium Chloride, Dimethicone Copolyol, Silica, Laureth-7, Trihydroxystearin, , Sodium Dehydroacetate, Phenoxyethanol, Propylparaben, Triethoxycaprylsilane, Arachidyl Behenate, , Disodium EDTA, Cetyl Dimethicone, Mica, Barium Sulfate , 77491 & 77492 & 77499, 77891

My main objection to Oil of Olay is that it is part of the Procter & Gamble company which actively encourages the use of animals in toxicology research for household products such as this one, along with others such as Daz, Persil and Fairy (There is a full list in my op on Fairy 'Kind to hands - cruel to hamsters'). Ethical issues aside, your op was detailed, interesting, and well-written. Ama.
