Over the years I have used many a different moisturiser. Plagued with un-cooperative skin in my teens I used all the Clearasil type products that I now suspect made the problem a whole lot worse not better! I then progressed to very neutral and cheap Boots / Superdrug own and later feeling ever so sophisticated dabbled with the Clarins / Clinique ranges. As you can see I’ve never been loyal to any particular brand. However somehow I’d never actually tried anything from the Oil of Olay range before. Perhaps because I’ve always associated Oil of Olay (or Ulay as previously known) with middle-aged women – probably because of the long running advert announcing it was the perfect Christmas gift for your mother. While you’re still in your teens the last thing you want to buy is something your mother might use! I’m not sure whether my change of heart has come from smart marketing on Oil of Olay’s part or just the fact I’m (a little) older now but I succumbed a bought a tub a couple of months ago.
To be far Oil of Olay have made an effort to update their packaging. This product used to come in a very boring and generally unappealing white box with a black Oil of Olay logo (see picture). It very much looked liked a moisturiser from a few decades before! Recently Oil of Olay ‘Complete Care’ cream has had a much need makeover. It still comes in a small box about 5cms tall and 6cms wide. The white colour remains however it has now been matched with gold and this coupled with a modernized logo and far less dated font makes the product look so much more appealing. However Oil of Olay should still take a look at the way Garnier market their very similar products – they are equally ‘ageing aware’ but come in very vibrant fresh packaging. It must work because my sixteen-year old sister recently bought Garnier’s ‘Stop’ moisturiser – I guess they say prevention is better than cure!
Anyway despite Oil of Olay’s image of old I still made a purchase. Although I haven’t got any yet I am paranoid about winkles. And as has been well documented in recent years the primary cause of winkles is damage from the sun’s harmful rays. Apparently 80% of premature ageing is caused by exposure to the sun. So any moisturiser I buy now has to have UV protection. Olay’s ‘Complete Care’ day cream has SPF 15 to protect against UVA and UVB rays. It also includes a vitamin and nutrient complex to make your skin “look so healthy it glows”. This is a middle of the range type moisturiser – between the moisturise only cheaper shop brands and the over the counter expensive creams. I bought mine during a special offer at Superdrug for £5.99 but I think it can normally be as expensive as £7.85. However if winkle prevention is your top priority then this cream is probably just as good as its far more expensive rivals – if not better in some cases because most Clarins moisturisers don’t actually contain SPF.
The tub itself is see-through with a black lid and contains 50ml of cream. Although at first glance this seems a rather measly quantity a little goes a long way and a tub lasts me for a couple of months used twice daily. The moisturising cream is white and of a thick consistency but not greasy at all. It also absorbs into the skin very easily. And the best bit is that it smells really lovely. I’m not all that good at describing a smell but it reminded me of a cross between suntan lotion and baby lotion – a subtle fresh fragrance. As normal apply the face and neck after cleansing.
The ‘Complete Care’ day cream is suitable for all skin types however if your skin is very oily or alternatively very greasy more specialist care might be required. I have combination skin and after application my forehead and cheeks (normally dry areas) feel comfortable and well moisturised while my T-zone is not left greasy. I haven’t had any adverse effects such as breakouts because the cream is designed not to block pores. My other sister is, however, allergic to almost anything including most creams so if you have a history of bad reactions to products I suggest you call the number below to find out more before sampling this product.
Overall I am very satisfied with this moisturiser. After applying the cream in the morning after cleansing my skin feels soft and supple all day. It hasn’t affected the delicate balance of my skin and I’ve noticed a slightly more glowy appearance. As for the winkles come back to me in 20 years time and I’ll let you know if its worked!

Advantages: Effective moisturiser, provides broad spectrum sun protection, good value for money. Disadvantages: Gave me spots.
Olay Complete Care Day Cream comes in a jar which contains 50ml of the moisturiser. The jar makes it very easy to get the amount of product that you want out, as you can just scoop it out with a finger. However, this does mean that it is easier to contaminate the contents with bacteria. A jar is the ideal packaging for this product though, because it is a cream, and too thick in texture for a bottle.
The texture of the white cream is quite thick, ... ...dragging. It absorbs in quite a short time, and feels very comfortable on my face and neck. It provides an ideal amount of moisture for my normal-dry skin (it is especially nice for the winter months, due to the thick texture), and makes my skin appear to glow slightly. Make-up goes on well afterwards, and the fragrance is nice and light.
This cream provides broad spectrum sun protection (from UVA and UVB rays), which is excellent. Many creams only ...

Advantages: effective, easy to apply Disadvantages: awkward jar shape
The dumpy squat glass container this cream comes in does look good on the dressing table, unfortunately it also means that those of us with larger than average hands will struggle to get our moneys worth.
The cream contains everything you need in a daytime moisturiser including sunscreen, it is easily applied and does not leave the skin greasy or shiny.
The unfrangranced variety means no worries about fragrance clashes.
This is more expensive ...

...young girl my mother used Oil of Ulay (as it was called then) and she had beautiful skin. So when I reached that certain age when the skin need a little more care I decided to give it a go! The results are fantastic! My skin is so soft, but what is better is that it feels good. I am also very happy with the UV protection it gives. I also like the fact that is is very easily absorbed and is fragrance-free. However, I do feel that the outer packaging ...

Advantages: sunscreen, good value Disadvantages: none
Oil of Olay offers great value for your money. I've used a broad range of different face creams and found that often price doesn't correspond with quality so much. Case in point: Complete UV Protective Moisture Cream. It's available in fragrance free and scented. This cream contains UVA/UVB sunscreen (I think it's the 3 % Zinc Oxide that does the job). With all the talk about how damaging those sunrays are to our skin, wouldn't you think that by ...
