I have used Olay Daily Facials to cleanse my face for about 4 years - pretty impressive brand loyalty! The reason I first decided to try them was because I was about to go off on holiday for 2 weeks to Peru - this would involve staying in basic hotels with a group of strangers, carrying much of my stuff about on long walks, and finally, the Inca Trail! I didn't want to be carting various bottles and jars about up and down mountains, so the cloths seemed like the ideal solution. For one thing, they weigh hardly anything, and for another, they don't contain any liquid that could leak in your bag - really useful for travelling. I thought that if I didn't find them very good for the face, I could always use them on the body like disposable flannels! In the end, I found that two weeks of exercise, fresh air and good food did not detract from the condition of my skin in the slightest (!) - and neither did the cloths. I've been using them ever since.

-------------------------How do you use them?--------------------------------

Simple - I use mine in the shower. You just get the cloth wet, get the lather going and gently cleanse your face - the cloths are very soft and do not feel "scratchy" on your skin like some of the pre-moistened make up removing wipes you can buy. You can use them around the eye area but I would advise caution! I find that I can happily cleanse my eye area in the morning with these cloths if I am nice and gentle, but trying to remove eye make up with them leaves my eyes rather sore - you don't want to get the lather in your eyes, it stings!! When you've given your face, neck and decolletage the once-over with the lather, you rinse the cloth and use it to remove the suds. My skin feels soft, clean, but not tight or dry. The steam from the shower seems to do my skin the world of good too. A bonus with these cloths is that if you follow the cleansing with a face mask, as I sometimes do, you can use the rinsed-out cloth to remove that as well. It's less scratchy than paper tissues and doesn't disintegrate. You then throw the used cloth away. It's much more hygienic than those little muslin cloths that you get with some wash-off cleansers - and I always worry about washing those in detergent and the residue from that going on my face! NB the packaging says do not flush the cloths!

-------------------------Are they right for my skin type?--------------------------

Personally I have the usual English/fair/combination skin type. I don't like the feeling of creamy cleansers - too greasy - and they also seem to take longer to use in the morning when I'm always late and in a hurry to get to work! I also don't like to use toner - they mostly seem to be too harsh (with alcohol), too oily (those ones for dry skin) or just too watery, ineffective and pointless. With the Olay Daily Facials, you don't need to use toner. I guess the water does the trick. I certainly find that using the cloths with hot water seems to leave my skin more ready to absorb moisturiser than if I had used a creamy cleanser followed by toner.

The cloths come in several versions: Normal to Dry - Hydrating, Combination/Oily - Clarifying and Sensitive Skin - Soothing. Despite having combination skin, I often find that products aimed at this skin type can be a little harsh for me. I first started using the cloths designed for normal/dry skin but one time when I went to buy a refill there were no packets of "Normal to Dry", so I aimed for the "Sensitive" cloths. I preferred these at once as they are unscented (the other cloths have a pleasant smell but I don't really see the point of adding perfume to a cleansing product, especially one designed for dry skin!) and are even more gentle than the "Normal to Dry" version. I have never found that either the normal/dry skin or sensitive versions of these cloths left my skin feeling greasy or imperfectly cleansed, but they certainly don't leave my skin feeling dried out or tight either. I don't really think someone with very dry skin would benefit from using the cloths - they are not harsh but if your skin lacked much in the way of natural oils you might find all of these were washed away! They certainly leave my oilier areas clean, soft and matt without feeling dry, and the dryer areas soft and not dehydrated. I like that the sensitive cloths contain Aloe Vera, Chamomile and Vitamin E - all good stuff! The Hydrating version has "grapeseed extract, vitamin E and Olay moisture" and the Clarifying has "witch hazel, pro-vitamin B5, and beta hydroxy", according to the dailyfacials.com website.

-------------------------What about the packaging?-------------------------

The cloths are packaged two ways:

* in a slightly translucent white plastic box with a flip top lid - the actual cloths have a thin plastic wrapper that you remove and discard and you then keep the cloths in the box. All the product info is on a thin cardboard sleeve around the box;

* as a refill - in the same plastic wrapper but encased in a thin cardboard box which once again lists all the product info. You just unwrap the cloths and keep them as before in the plastic box.

The product info just tells you how to use the cloths, the usual ingredient listing and manufacturer details.

I don't think the plastic box is recyclable - at least, where I live, the Council only wants PET1 and PET2 and it has to be clear! Obviously the plastic wrapper goes in the bin along with the used cloths themselves. The cardboard can go into the recycling of course. It might sound a little wasteful to use a product that must be thrown away in this fashion - however, if you used a creamy cleanser from a bottle you would be throwing away a certain quantity of cotton wool pads or paper tissues and you still might not be able to recycle the bottle after use. Once you've bought the cloths in the plastic box you can just buy the refills, which use less packaging. Olay have reduced the amount of packaging since the cloths were first available - the refills used to come in a little plastic box that would sit inside the other plastic box... so that's an improvement.

-------------------------Are they expensive?-------------------------

The cloths seem to have become less expensive - maybe reducing the packaging has helped! I've just bought a refill in Boots for £3.99. (I think the refills are cheaper than the plastic box but by how much I'm not sure.) I only use the cloths in the morning, and not for removing make up, so that packet should last me about a month. Boots (and other shops) also seem to do special offers on this product quite frequently - three for two or a temporary special price. Obviously there are cheaper products, but I think for a very effective product that is pleasant to use, the price is reasonable. Also Olay seems to be aiming itself as a "mid range" brand nowadays, as opposed to its former incarnation as the favourite brand of old ladies living on the state pension!! Their anti-ageing range is quite expensive, for example - so I think the price fits the ambitions of the brand, if nothing else!

-------------------------Summary-------------------------

Olay Daily Facials cleansing cloths are:
  • very effective but gentle for cleansing combination skin
  • probably a little harsh if your skin is very dry or sensitive
  • very convenient and cut down on the amount of products you need (especially useful for travelling!)
  • effective at removing make up but a little harsh on the eyes for this purpose
  • priced reasonably and subject to frequent special offers
  • worthy of brand loyalty from a fickle consumer like myself!!

I would give it 5 stars if I thought that anyone could use some version of the cloths and find them suitable, but as mentioned, I don't think they would really benefit dry skin. Also, I do feel a little guilty about creating so much waste!
