Since Olay Moisturising Body Wash was brought out a few years ago, other manufacturers have slowly jumped on the bandwagon and brought out their own moisturising washes – including Dove, Boots and Original Source, but Olay still seems to be the best, and most popular brand. Before Olay, most shower gels were just that: a gel, which would create a lather, smell nice (usually fruity!) and keep you clean, but that was about it. Olay went a step further and provided us with a wash which actually moisturises as well as creating lather, smelling lovely (although not fruity!) and of course keeping you clean. This was a great idea, as showering (especially if you don’t towel dry your skin thoroughly afterwards) can really dry out your skin. This product goes some way to counteract
these effects.
The body wash is in a squeezy bottle with a flip top, which is flat on both the top and the bottom. They suggest that once the bottle is less than half full you stand it upside down for ease of pouring. However, I don’t tend to do this until it is almost empty as I find that you actually get too much out in one go if you leave it upside down. It comes in two sizes: 400ml or 200ml. It is, of course, more economical to buy the larger size. However, the smaller size is sometimes available in a ‘starter pack’ together with a free “body puff”. Body puffs were also something of an innovation when this product first came out, but again, most manufacturers have jumped on the aforementioned bandwagon and they can now be bought for under a pound in most chemists. Olay recommend that you use the wash with a body puff, and state that the 400ml bottle contains enough for 80+ uses with the puff, and the 200ml enough for 40+ uses. I would certainly echo this recommendation. Although I haven’t counted the number of uses I get from the bottle, it does seem to last a very long time. Also, the puff is a great way of working up a lather – a small (roughly 10p sized) blob of the body wash on a puff provides enough lather to wash your whole body. As you lather up the product it has a rich, creamy smell which at the same time is also clean and fresh and not overpowering. The smell lingers on your skin after showering and also makes the bathroom smell nice!
The body wash really does do what it says and moisturises your skin extremely well. I have very dry skin on my arms and legs, so have to admit to using a moisturiser as well, but if I don’t have time to moisturise after showering my skin doesn’t feel anywhere near as dry as it would do if I hadn’t used the body wash. I do suffer from spots on my chest and back, so tend to avoid this area when using the body wash, as it is so rich that I think it would exacerbate this problem. (Incidentally I use Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash for my spot-prone areas, and have written an opinion on this one too in case anyone is interested!) Using any kind of body wash, such as this one, is also beneficial because the massaging action of rubbing the product into the skin with a body puff improves circulation, exfoliates and may even reduce the appearance of cellulite (and anything which does this MUST be good!)
Just over a year ago Olay also brought out Daily Renewal Body Wash, which was designed to rejuvenate older skins, and was originally very similar in packaging to the Moisturising Body Wash. They then changed it so it was available in three or four different varieties, much smaller bottles and a higher price! Fortunately the Moisturising Body Wash remained the same! I can highly recommend Olay Moisturising Body Wash to anyone who suffers from dry skin and wants to supplement their normal moisturiser, or to anyone who doesn’t have time to moisturise on a regular basis as it will definitely make a noticeable difference to your skin. It may be a little more expensive than some, but it lasts such a long time that it would probably be false economy to use anything cheaper.
---------------------------------------------------------------- FOOTNOTE: I actually received this product as a gift and would not have purchased it myself, due to its being made by Proctor and Gamble, a company whose principles on animal testing I strongly disagree with. This was something I did not realise until I had been using the product for some time, and I have since stopped using it. Although I found the product to be most effective I will not be buying it again myself for these personal reasons. However, I have tried to write an objective opinion as I realise that many people will not share my views, and I would not wish to not recommend an otherwise useful product simply on this basis, as I would not wish to inflict my views on readers.

I know what you mean about the testing on animals thing - it's so unnecessary! I have stopped using Herbal Essences and Oil of Olay for this reason. x
