Oil of Olay Pro-Vital Regenerating Night Cream

I've often used Oil of Olay products, bath foams and shower gels and so on, probably, I suppose, because they have a good reputation, and they always seem to be high quality, but I have always found them a bit out of my price range, because, when it comes to these things, I don't usually have the budget to spend £8-10 per item on something that asks to be used once or twice a day for maximum effect!

It so happens that I bought this product two weeks ago because it was sat on the reduced shelf in Tescos, in a damaged box, at the pleasurable price of £3.18, which is considerably less than the £8 or so I believe it's usually sold at.

Part of the Regenerating range by Olay it, naturally, recommends that you use it in conjunction with other products by the same label to achieve maximum results - it might be worth bearing in mind that I did not, and simply used it to follow my regular (Johnson's, out of interest) cleanser and toner every night.

Where to start? With the looks, perhaps. Nice, clean-looking packaging, a solid glass pot with a seal on it for freshness - I like to leave these on such things as I find it just helps, somehow, to stop it drying out, especially if you're frugal with application as I sometimes am, after a while, some creams dry out, and so on. Easy to access for application, and not one of those pots with a daft dimple in the base of it that means you leave several applications' worth hanging around at the base of it because you'd need a cotton bud to get it out.

The first time I used it, I applied a thin, even covering (four or five dabs around the face, rubbed in gently), and it felt very smooth, very silky, a rich cream, with a pleasant, subtle fragrance that didn't suggest anything in particular - similar to most Olay products, if you're familiar with them.

Immediately my skin felt softer, moisturised, as becomes a moisturising cream, so that's all good. It had a cool, but nourishing sensation to it, that seemed immediately to suggest it was high quality.

When I woke up in the morning, I could feel the residue of it on my face, and it made me want to wash immediately, although I suspect it might have been the unfamiliarity of the product, as I didn't have this so much on further application.

It left my skin a little greasy, though, even by morning, and that doesn't seem to change however little or much I use. I'd say my skin type was normal to combination, for reference.

The cream is absorbed into the skin easily, no visible traces left after moments of massaging it in, although the sensation of it having been there did remain until it was washed off.

I've been using this product nightly for two weeks, and in this time I would suggest my skin has become notably softer. I have always used moisturiser, but this is the first specific "night cream" I've used.

Regenerating products, according to the promotional material, encourage the skin's natural processes to give you fresh, healthy-looking skin. I'd say I've seen some evidence of this, in terms of the fact that my skin tone is a little more even, which I find notable, because it's always been rather...patchy.

The difference is slight, but enough to make me think that it must be down to the product, because it's the only thing I've changed in my daily routine over this period.

I've still got plenty of the pot left, I estimate this will last me between four and six weeks, as there's about two-thirds left, and whilst previously I wouldn't have considered splashing out on something like this, I might just do so now, if only because the tone and texture of my skin seems visibly improved.

I experienced no irritation with this product, which I have done in the more distant past with one or two moisturisers, and apart from wanting to wash in the morning, no other drawbacks.

I can't speak for effects on fine lines and wrinkles, another thing that the advertising claims this product can help with, as, touch wood, I don't have any to speak of, but the difference in texture - plumper, if you like - suggests to me that it would be effective on those too.

Just one last word of warning - it tastes absolutely horrible, so if you do want to apply it over your lips, don't lick them!
