I have incredibly dry skin; I'm usually always itching. So yesterday, when I went to the doctor about an infection, he also prescribed me some Oilatum and some special soap to help get rid of my dry skin. I went to the pharmacy and then immediately had a bath.
Whilst the bath was filling I sat down and looked at the back of the packed. I have tried the stuff before but not for about two years, when I last used it, but not properly. I found that it is suitable for everyone, but babies should have a smaller dose and you must not swallow it.
Preparing it...
What you do is you run the bath, and while it's running add the Oilatum. The amount you are recommended to add usually is 1 capful for a 4 inch bath and 2 capfuls for 8 inches. This isn't very much, and seems very little. But trust me, you need no more.
Remember to be careful not to spill the Oilatum anywhere except inside the bath, because it is amazingly greasy and oily, and therefore extremely difficult to remove. It needs these natural oils to help moisten your skin in the bath.
Run the bath quite hot, it's always more inviting and I think makes the Oilatum work better, because I have used it before yesterday. It does, however feel quite strange as you step in to the bath. It is normal, though, that you can't see your feet four inches down!
Odour and invitingness...
I have to tell you that stepping in to a white bath is not the most inviting thing, especially when it smells of chemicals. But the smell does die off as the bath fills and it also becomse rather fun playing around in the opaque water. As I said, make it hot to make it nicer.
Once in the bath...
Once your in the bath, you need to lie down and make sure you're fully submerged. Yes, every part of you for the full effect, although you should try and keep your hair dry, because the grease in the Oilatum is difficult to remove.
I think I have found a method which helps the Oilatum work better. If you take a cupful in your hand and move it towards your body. Then, rub it in to your skin, a bit like a cream. I believe that this helps the oils get in to the skin most effectively.
Repeat the described method all over your body. It will make your skin start to feel very smooth, soft and rather slippery, which is a lovely feeling. If you have been prescribed some special soap, then you should use it after soaking for a while.
Once your finished...
When your finished, take a clean towel, for your use only. Make sure you're the only person who uses it, because it could be bad for other people. Be gentle with the towel, almost stroking yourself with it, rather than being voilent and rubbing yourself vigorously.
Pull out the plug and let the Oilatum go down the plughole. Don't worry about this; it's not harmful - everything's okay. Once your dressed, there is one last thing you have to do. You'll need to rinse the bath. Use cold water on a shower and your hands.
It's probably also a good idea to put the lid back on the bottle and give it a good rinse under the tap. This may ruin the label, but I have to admit the bottle is not very well designed, and can drip down the side without any difficulty.
Safety First...
You should be careful when standing in a bath full of Oilatum. Because of its special oils, which do have a tendancy to stick to the edge of your bath, your tub could become potentially dangerous. So grip handles well and take care!
Effect...
Oilatum works well, restoring the skin's natural oils. Some people could have bad reactions to it, but I generally think that most people will be okay with it. It leaves your skin lovely and smooth and it really does feel fantastic.
Extras...
If your skin is terribly bad then you may want to add some E45 after bathing. This is available everywhere in the form of a cream, and, although rather expensive, it is very, very good for dry skin. Just rub it on gently like a normal cream.
Non-Aqueous Cream...
Be careful with this stuff. I was prescribed this and this is the reason I have updated, for the NAqCream made my skin terribly itchy. The skin itself felt more moist, but my eczema just worsened - it made most of my lets become covered in eczeme which developed in to itchy cuts.
Washing your hair...
It's not a good idea to submerge yourself in anything else while on Oilatum, so what you should do is wash your hair leaning over a sink, of with your head inside the bath. Going back to your usual stuff before you finish the course could restore dry skin.
How to find it...
If you have particularly bad skin, go to your doctor and show him your skin. Then tell him that you were recommended Oilatum. He should be able to give you a prescription for it. If not, then try going to the pharmace and asking for some over the counter.
*Updated: Now includes details about dangerous, slippery baths, E45, Non-Aqueous Cream and who it's suitable for.

Review of Oilatum Bath Formula for itchy, irritating dry skin
Advantages: helps sooth skin Disadvantages: very oily
...child. I have found the Oilatum bath formula to be very helpful. I put some in my bath water or if i’m having a shower I use it like a shower gel. I have been using it for 3 years now and wouldn’t change to anything else it really does help me. It soothes my skin and moisturises it so that it isn’t so dry and itchy and helps prevent your skin drying out, and it leaves my skin feeling very soft and smooth.
You can buy it in bottles of 150ml or 300ml. ... ...me and my children like oilatum soap, cream, scalp treatment. For my children I get the Oilatum junior bath formula and flare up bath treatment.
The Oilatum bath formula is really easy to use, all you have to do is add some to your bath water and get in. Oilatum bath formula is oily so you have to take care in getting and getting out of the bath so as you don’t slip and hurt your self, it also turns your water a milky colour. It costs around £8.65 ...

...feeling bath of Oilatum.
Oilatum is a bath emollient made by Stiefel Labs for the treatment of dry and itchy skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. The plastic bottle hasn’t changed much over the years and still comes in a rather sickly turquoise colour. The active ingredient in Oilatum is light liquid paraffin (63.4%) but also contains Acetylated wool alcohols, Isopropyl palmitate, Macrogol 400 dilaurate, Macrogol ester and fragrance.
... ...for infants and children). The Oilatum disperses into the water giving a milky effect. After bathing for 10-20mins, the skin should then be gently pat dry with a clean towel. An alternative to bathing is to gently rub a small amount of Oilatum onto wet skin, rinse off and then pat dry …although I’ve found that bathing has a much better effect.
An added bonus in using Oilatum is that it cleanses the skin so there’s no need to use ...

My Mum suffers with Arthritis and has been on steroids for 30 plus years and they have made her skin thin and very flaky, no matter how much moisturising cream she uses it doesn’t help. Recently she was in Hospital and was showered and bathed with a product called “Oilatum” and they advised her to carry on using this to soften and protect her skin.
She got it on prescription from her Doctor and has never needed to use moisturiser since then.
You ... ...the shower gel is £8 for a 125g tube, small bottle for bath use is £4.80 and large £8.50 and a bar of “Oilatum” soap is £3.50 (but a word of warning the soap is not as good as the other products)
To use the shower gel you must first shower as normal and then on wet skin apply small amounts and massage in gently, rinse briefly with warm water and then pat yourself dry and believe me you will love it (just like me) as I am a user of a sun bed and ...

...I noticed a bottle of Oilatum Bath Formula,I had a quick read of the box and it sounded ideal to put into Jacks bath.
I paid £4.95 for a 150ml bottle which I didnt think was too bad of a price.
It comes in a white and blue box which states Oilatrum Bath Formula for itchy, irritating dry skin conditions and suitable for eczema.
The bottle is also white and blue and states the same as the box.
The actual liquid contains an Emollient Mineral Oil ... ...I will continue to use Oilatum as long as Jack has his eczema.
I would recommend this to everyone who suffers from a skin condition.

...was using, and she prescibed Oilatum to use instead.
I tried it for a week, but during that time both boys became a lot worse. The eczema came up in unsightly red patches and was really itchy. It covered their whole bodies, instead of the usual small areas like backs of knees, elbow creases etc.
I have stopped using the Oilatum and for the last 4 days, I have been using Sanex. Their eczema is not as angey looking, less itchy and is beginning to ...
