Advantages: Great graphics with individual style. Involving gampelay. Great use of the Wii-mote. Disadvantages: Limited replay value. May not be to everyone's taste

Originally released for the PS2, Okami was a game that got somewhat lost at the time, in part due to the arrival of the PS3 and the dissolution of Clover Studio who developed it. However, it's been given a second chance with this new and improved version for the Wii; converted for Capcom by new developers Ready at Dawn. It's essentially a role playing adventure in the Zelda mould and, in common with Twilight Princess you also play the character of a wolf; in this case the sun goddess Amaterasu, on a mission to save ancient Japan from a terrible evil. However, far from being a clone it's a very different game with a unique look and control system.
That's most evident in the graphics which evoke the feel of a Japanese watercolours and woodcuts; this is evident from looking at a still screen alone, but for the full effect you really need to watch the game in motion and it's worth hunting down some of the videos of the game on YouTube; here's a link to one of them.

Obviously, people may have differing opinions on this, but I think it's a breath of fresh air after the excessive cuteness of most Wii games, and the hollow realism typical of games on other consoles. There's an accompanying soundtrack that adds to the feel of historical Japan and changes subtly depending on the situation.
Despite the graphics and setting the gameplay is fairly easy to get to grips with; before long you'll be meeting new characters, setting off on epic quests, solving puzzles and getting stuck into some great boss fights. Again, comparisons with Zelda spring to mind in terms of the overall structure, although the individual elements of Okami are quite different.
In particular, there's a truly unique control system in which you're required to draw brush strokes to perform certain actions; despite the game's origins on the PS2, this totally suits the Wii-mote which futher adds to the immersive nature of the game. As with most wii-mote gesture controls it takes a bit of practice though and it's relatively easy to mess up in the heat of the action, so younger and inexperienced Wii-mote handlers might wish to get a bit of practice in on simpler games first.
In terms of longevity, there's about forty hours play here, which is pretty good for this sort of game, so it's definitely worth a rental. However, with only a single player campaign, the replay value is probably quite limited. I can still imagine people digging it out in the future to revisit the unique graphical style though, even though the game will then hold few surprises, so it's well worth buying too; expect to pay around £25. Note that, although it has considerably revamped graphics and controls, there's no new content from the PS2 version either.
Overall, this is one of those rare innovative games, that breaks new ground and also plays brilliantly at the same time, in a console scene that's dominated by flashy but shallow fare and minor increments to long established franchises; it shows just what can be achieved with a bit of imagination. People who have read my other reviews on this site should know that I don't hand out five stars lightly but I'm going to make an exception here as I cannot recommend this game highly enough.
Advantages: Gorgeous graphics, great gameplay, fantastic soundtrack Disadvantages: quite hard (depends on how good at gaming you are)
...have said that about. Okami sees you taking charge of a spiritual wolf named Amaterasu (a Japanese goddess) who is on a quest to rid the world of the evil Orochi- a seven headed dragon. You are armed with your athletic wolf ability and a celestial brush, which can be safely called the backbone of the entire game. GRAPHICS The entire game takes the cell shaded approach which is probably what throws people off the game. Though I am not a fan of cell ... ...but these graphics are a joy on the eyes. Everything is so beautifully drawn, you really cannot fault the graphics. The entire world is so gorgeous you find yourself restricting your wolf to just a walking pace to take in the rolling luscious landscapes and the sparkling trees, flowers and water formations. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: it's just gorgeous and the screen shots on the net or the back of the game box don't do it any justice. ...

Advantages: Original idea, great story, charming graphics and a very big game Disadvantages: Occasionally gets slow and repetitive
to get too heavily involved in the fighting yourself; there's no autosave, and indeed you can only save back at the castle, so it's all to easy to lose a few hours of play from a single mistake. With seven other kingdoms to compete with, you've also got an uphill struggle against you, but eventually you'll find yourself in a position to take on the first of them and, after a suitable boss battle, it can be yours.
The rest of the game plays somewhat akin to MySims Kingdom or Animal Crossing, as you go about your town making improvements and being the benevolent ruler, although it's less directed and with less finicky controls than the former.
Graphics & Sound
A lot of Wii games have given simplistic cute graphics something of a bad name, but this is certainly one of the exceptions. There's a very individual style with a hint ...
Advantages: very long game Disadvantages: still a kiddy game!!
Gameplay
the main gamin gameplay for link wolf link and horse controlls are no problem, but as soon as you (spoilers) ride on other things the controlls are a little more difficult. But overall there is not much wrong with this.
Graphics
I have seen better graphics in metroid prime, but they are still pretty good while they can still be smoother like in some areas of the game and other areas are just fine.
Sound
pretty decent but Okami was better there was barely any sound in some parts of the game and the speaker on the wii mote was not a problem for me.
overall
Great game the weapons are great but some you never even really use after the temple, but within that the playing of the wolf was fine and not a problem. Also some of the story in the game kind of comes out of no where, but the last boss in okami came out ...
