Olbas Oil Inhalant Decongestant

My 3 year old daughter has had a runny nose and a cough on and off now for over 2 weeks. She goes to a day nursery and the children just keep passing the germs around.

She has been fine during the day but every night just as she goes off to sleep she starts coughing. It is the same with all of us you manage your cold during the day but as soon as you lie down to go to sleep you can feel yourself getting congested. You cannot breathe properly, you get that tickle in the back of your throat and then the coughing starts.

I started putting a couple of drops of Olbas oil on a tissue and then placing it in her pillow case before she went to bed and the difference this made was amazing. Almost instantly she stopped coughing and was less congested and as result we all got a good nights sleep.

You can smell the oil as soon as you walk into the room as it is strong and smells of mint and eucalyptus. It is not an unpleasant smell and when you inhale it you can feel it clearing your nose straight away.

Olbas oil is available over the counter and I bought mine from my local chemist for £1.99 for a 10ml bottle, it is also available in 28ml size.

Olbas oil is a mixture of essential oils that give off a vapour, which helps to clear congestion. The ingredients are: -
Cajuput oil BPC 18.50%
Clove oil BP 0.10%
Eucalyptus oil BP 35.45%
Juniper berry oil BPC ’49 2.70%
Menthol BP 4.10%
Dementholised mint oil BP 35.45%
Wintergreen oil BPC ’49 3.70%

Olbas oil originated in Switzerland and is a blend of pure plant oils. It is used to relieve bronchial and nasal congestion, hayfever and can be used by inhalation for minor infections of the respiratory tract. It can also be applied to the skin to relieve muscular pain and stiffness.

It is not suitable for children under 3 months of age and is for inhalation and external use only.

Olbas oil can also be inhaled by putting 2 to 3 drops on a tissue, but only for adults or children aged 2 and over. For children 3 months to 2 years 1 drop can be put on a tissue and then be held for them to inhale. It can also be added to hot water to be inhaled or left in the bedroom over night. Obviously, this would have to be out of reach of any children.

I would certainly recommend Olbas oil, especially at this time of the year when coughs and colds are inevitable.
