The Old El Paso Fajita kit is easily recognisable, as it is in a box apporximately 10" square and is decorated in their trade mark yellow background with a row of red Spanish style, roof tiles across the top. 'Old El Paso' is then written below this roof in the same red and then on a blue/green background is the description of what is in the box, with a picture of the completed dish below all this. Obviously this one is the Fajita dinner kit and the one I will review below.
Cost And Availability
For a standard sized pack which weighs in at 505g you should expect to pay around £2.95 and they are available at all good supermarkets and decent mini supermarkets (Spar, Co-Op etc.). Although they are quite often found on offer and I often get three for the price of two or sometimes they are as much as half price. At the time of witing they are on offer at Ocado for £1.79.
Whats In The Box
Included in the box are: 8 flour tortillas 1 pack of salsa 1 pack of spice mix
Also, of course, you get full cooking instructions on the back of the box.
Just Add
According to the box you just add Chicken or Beef, Onion and Peppers. I have, however, tried allsorts of combinations in the past, my sister is vegetarian, so it is a favourite choice when she comes round for a meal, as is is quite easy to make two lots and leave the meat out of hers. I normally add a few different types of veg to make up for the lack of meat and courgette is a favourite choice, although this also goes very well with the meat version also.
I also have to make a seperate pan for my wife as she does not like her food too spicy, and most of my family and friends like it to burn your face off, she is also allergic to peppers so I have to make her a version without those, however, even with all these fads it is still an very easy dish to prepare.
Preparation
I normally like to prepare everything ahead of cooking this dish as it makes the actual cooking of the dish very simple when you come to it.
By this I just mean I get everything chopped up ready and put it on plates covered with cling film in the fridge. This can be done two to three hours before cooking and makes the dish extremely easy to put together after your guests have arrived.
I chop half an onion, half a pepper and one chicken breast per person eating. I like to use a couple of different coloured peppers to add a little colour to the dish, I also quite often put some courgette in, which I cut into thin strips about 3" long.
I also like to prepare everything that I will serve with the dish, such as chopped fresh chilli and grated cheese.
Cooking
I do not really follow the instructions on the box to the letter. I like to use a wok and I firstly lightly fry my onion for about five minutes in a little olive oil, then I add the rest of the veg and let that fry gently for another three to four minutes. Next I seperate this lot into however many different pans I need to and add the meat to the ones that are having it. At the same time as adding the meat I add the spice mix that comes with the pack. This is fairly spicy so some care should be taken if you are catering for people who do not like their food too spicy. I like to put a good shake over, about two teaspoons per pan roughly, I also add salt and pepper at this time.
All that remains now is to turn the heat up a little and keep the pan moving occaisionally until the meat is cooked. I then transfer each pan to an oven proof dish and transfer to the oven on a low heat while I warn the tortillas. These can be done individually in a hot frying pan or you can just microwave them in a pile. Whatever you choose to do it is a good idea to get them into a nice warm container and covered with tin fiol as soon as possible as they cool down fairly quickly.
Now everything just needs putting on the table. I give each person a plate with some salad on, and put the cooked mixtures and some chopped chillis and grated cheese on the table. I also put out the salsa that comes with the kit, some guacamole and some soured cream. Then everyone just helps themselves.
Making A Fajita
All you have to do is get your flour tortilla and put whatever you would like on it, down the middle in a line about 1" to 2" wide, but leave a bit of a gap at the bottom. Next you fold the bottom up over the mixture and simply roll the two sides over to give you a wrap with the mixture inside and a sealed flap at the bottom so nothing can drop out.
Taste
Well the flavour is really down to the cook. The Old El PAso kit simply has the tortillas, the salsa and the spice mix with it. The spice mix becomes the main flavour of the dish really and it is a sort of paprika peppery taste, and is fairly spicy, if that makes any sense!! Anyway it is very nice and like I said one of my favourite dishes. You can alter the flavour in many different ways, by adding different veg, more or less spice mix, even more or less salt and pepper, until you find the optimum recipe for your own taste. Grated cheese is a really nice flavour addition, I like to sprinkle a little over the top of the hot chichen mixture just before rolling it. Soured cream is another of my favourite additions, as it cools your mouth after a little even if you have put loads of fresh chillis on it.
Conclusion
All things considered the Old El PAso Fajita dinner kit is a great thing to have in, it will keep for a while also, and can be turned into a really good meal, whether it is just for a couple, for a family with kids or even if you have people around for dinner, it has always been a popular dish with my friends. If you have not tried them before I would highly reccomend them to you.
Advantages: Convenient and easy to prepare, authentic taste Disadvantages: Smell and taste both linger
...time ago we discovered the Old El Paso range of dinner kits, including the fajitas version which I'm going to talk about here. Having eaten fajitas in a number of different restaurants, I can honestly say that I found this kit to be one of the most authentic reproductions I've tried - very often, the food in ready made meals bears no resemblance to the real thing and is generally not worth buying in my view.
You can find these packs, which come ... ...is available separately in the Old El Paso range, the only difference being that the salsa comes in a jar, there is more of it, and you can buy both mild and 'piccante'(hot) varieties. Needless to say, it's more expensive to buy the items individually; however, if you prefer corn tortillas to the flour type, at least the option is there.
To make the fajitas, you'll need one or two sweet peppers (they recommend red and green, but frankly, I think ...

...of at the time!!!
Old El Paso Fajita Dinner Kits are a remarkably easy way to create a Mexican dish in your very own kitchen, resulting in a cullinary experience like no other!!! For those who are not familiar with Mexican cuisine, fajita is the name for a dish which involves wrapping meat and/or vegetables in a tortilla, and then adding other toppings such as salsa sauce or sour cream. They are then picked up and eaten using your hands, hopefully ... ...the seasoning mix on top, Old El Paso provide us with a complete cullinary experience, and by the time you come to eat the product your mouth is so wet in anticipation.
The taste itself is fantastic. The vegetables are left quite crisp giving a wonderfully crunchy yet spicy feeling in the mouth, and then the salsa sauce gives even more heat to them. If they are too hot, you can add sour cream or the like to them, but in my view this would be quite ...

...I love and that is Old El Paso, known for their great Mexican recipes, Fajitas, tacos and enchiladas they have them all. All their recipes are easy to follow and for a dinner are ready in no time at all.
Old El Paso makes a dinner kit for Fajitas which is easier than buying all the items separately, although all good supermarkets also stock their products individually.
In the box there is the fajita sauce, which comes in a powder, flour tortillas ... ...buy chicken, onion, peppers and anything else you like on you fajita sour cream or guacamole.
The easiest way to cook the fajitas is to first cut and prepare all the ingredients before you start cooking I find.
Heat some oil in a pan and add the diced chicken, once brown then add the diced onion, sliced peppers and also the powdered fajita mix and stir and cook for a further 5 minutes. Then in the microwave heat the tortillas and then serve.
