I'm a married father of 4 children who likes days out has experience of family products and destinations. I find sites like this useful before purchasing/embarking on a trip somewhere, so hopefully my experiences of places will assist people too

I have visited Old Trafford twice in 2 seasons now specifically for the United v City Derby. The ground has good transport links to Manchester via Tram, Bus, Car and "Football special" train. Initially I had some reservations about attending the ground for such a "hard fought" fixture, however the reception of fans and organisation was most excellent. I would recommend catching one of 3 special football trains from Manchester Piccadilly (on match days) to get you to the ground in around 10 minutes.... these trains are two commuter style trains that are joined together - arrive totally empty and can generally find space, with some standing, for everyone who is waiting.
The train drops you off by the south Stand, which is not far from the away section, major entrances to stands and the club shop. Match days are very well policed, especially this fixture and there is no end of specific club officials in the area of the club shop with its very well organised layout.
There is no shortage of United-Employed officials at every entrance, gate, walkway and stair block to assist anyone to their seats who is lost or has difficulties with mobility and so on. On both occasions I have sat in the North Stand - on one occasion climbing hundreds of steps into the uppermost tier. But again, help is on hand to anyone who may struggle.
There are ample facilities both pre match and during the match for toileting (also very clean) and refreshments - although these can be expensive as you would expect from most venues. You are allowed to take your own drinks in plastic bottles into the ground, but it is requested that you first remove the lid. This is also standard procedure at most concerts and sporting events.
Once in the ground, you find the master of ceremonies to be quite engaging in the pre-match build up and there is usually some form of half time entertainment, usually involving charity.
You would expect the sheer surge of 70.000 people all leaving their seats at the same time to be traumatic at worst, slow at best. This hasn't been the case. There has been a large volume of bodies yes, however it has been orderly and safe departure on both occasions.
Tickets are quite expensive, as you may expect from a Top flight club - prices vary game to game and are available on the website. The seats have good views from most parts of the ground, however the sheer number of people and seats does make for little leg room and cramped width so it may not be the best of ideas for anyone claustrophobic.

Advantages: Lots of history for the die hard fans. Disadvantages: Will make you a little bit jealous if you support one of the more struggling teams in the premiership.
