INTRODUCTION ------------------------ As a Plymouth Argyle fan I can't help but dislike Ian Holloway. As a volunteer at the club in the study centre I have met Holloway and listened to a few of his motivating pre match talks. His fame and fortune however is based on lies and deceipt.
Holloway is very popular in football for his hilarious quotes. I find myself laughing uncontrollably at some of them, but many are arrogant and mis-informed lies. It is safe to say that since his arrival at Plymouth Argyle Ian has made a huge impact, and his departure has made a larger one. Last years match against Ipswich at Home Park on the 31st October was known as 'Holloween' and Argyle fans dressed in appropriate attire to show support...thing is he managed to fool the whole city!
IAN HOLLOWAY ------------------------ Ian Holloway was born in Bristol in 1963 and in the beginning of his career he played for Bristol Rovers. Since his debut for Bristol he has played for Wimbledon (now MK Dons), Torquay and QPR.
Ian is well known as the manager who likes to play. His first managerial role was at Bristol Rovers when he took on the struggling team. Her continued to play and manage the club helping them progress to a respectful 5th place. He gave up playing in 1999 Holloway gave up playing to concentrate on his managerial career and managed to lead Bristol to just below the play-off position. In 2001 Holloway took on the position at QPR to support the struggling side, despite his efforts they were relegated but he kept his job. Holloway stayed on and rebuilt the team guiding them back to Division One. In 2006 he was suspended after rumours that he was linked to Leicester City. Five months after his suspension he was 'snapped up' by Plymouth Argyle and has made a massive impact on the City. On the 21st Nov 2007 however he left Plymouth to seek 'greener pastures' at Leicester.
OLLIE --------- Despite my pre-conception that Ian Holloway was an arrogant and selfish man I couldn't have been further from the truth (well based onthe book anyway - he is still a liar and deceiptfull man). His autobiography 'Ollie' is a truly heart-warming story of his life so far. Until I read it I had no idea that he had nursed his wife through Lymph cancer and that three of his children were born deaf. Ian has four children and to think that three are profoundly deaf makes me admire him more. I cannot start to imagine how hard life must be for Ian.
Ian stated that choose to put his children first and as a result commuted from Bristol to London everyday so that he did not have to remove his children from school. He is fluent in sign language and gives a lot of time and energy to his family. In fact his decision to move to Plymouth was partly based on the welfare of his children. But the money was far better at Leicester and not long ater will be moving his kids yet again to anothr part of the UK.
The book takes us through his life all the ups and downs and trials and tribulations. The book refers to his love of his family and regret at spending so little time with them. Whilst the autobiography pulls at a few heart-strings one can't help but feel annoyed and angry at the lies spouted by the greedy pig!
Unlike most managers who write about their successes, their many awards and achievements, Holloway writes about his emotional past!
Holloway puts everything into his career. He said that his proudest moment will be to get Plymouth Argyle to the premiership and that he loves the city and the club yet a few hours after saying the rumours about him leaving were 'poppycock' he resigns. It turns out the things he had said were all lies.
The book will have you laughing and even crying in places, I can't remember the last book that I reacted in this way to. The 200 pages of pure captivating stories had me hooked from start to finish. I couldn't put the book down. I just feel so hurt and betrayed that most of it was a load of rubbish :-(
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY --------------------------------------- I have seen the book in WH Smiths and Waterstones in Plymouth although I should think it is available Nationwide. 'OLLY'ISMS ---------------- ►Ian's reply after after Hasney injured his nose made me chuckle ---"Hasney's bust his hooter. He can smell round corners now."
►Despite the disappointment of losing against Watford in the FA Cup Quarter Finals I couldn't help but laugh at this quote "We threw everything at them. The kitchen sink, golf clubs, emptied the garage and threw it at them. Unfortunately, it was not enough, but at least my garage is tidy."
►"I couldn't be more chuffed if I were a badger at the start of the mating season" (Said after a win)
►One of the most famous quotes has to be this one --- "To put it in gentleman's terms if you've been out for a night and you're looking for a young lady and you pull one, some weeks they're good looking and some weeks they're not the best. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi. She weren't the best looking lady we ended up taking home but she was very pleasant and very nice, so thanks very much, let's have a coffee"--- which described the 'ugly' win at Chesterfield. This quote led to Ian's books of quotes named Let's Have Coffee: The Tao of Ian Holloway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB9rI7p7vmk
►"I have such bad luck at the moment that if I fell in a barrel of boobs I'd come out sucking my thumb."
►"It was lucky that the linesman wasn't stood in front of me as I would have poked him with a stick to make sure he was awake."
►With quotes like these you could easily liken Holloway to the Simon Cowell of the football world. To me these quotes are what make Ian Holloway the success he is today.

SUMMARY ---------------- This book will probably interest Leicester fans...well until he does the dirty on them too. To be quite honest I loved the man and trusted every little word that came out of his mouth but he has lost the trust and respect of most footie fans. Its just not the done thing to say one day that you adore the club and leaving is poppycock then leave for more money elsewhere...especially when he complains about other people doing that in his book. He can appear to be a moral and truthful guy when in fact he is like most other money -grabbing managers out there!
This review is not based on 'sour grapes' or a 'grudge' it purely based on the fact that this man prides himself on his honesty and the stories in the local press speak a totally different tale! He has lied consistently for several weeks and any ounce of respect I once had has been lost!
