Binoculars are mainly used by bird watchers as to get a closer look at them. Many people also use binoculars for occasions such as holidays where they travel to destinations of natural beauty. Using a binocular enables them to see the scenic beauty from a better and closer perspective. The Olympus 8X25 WPI is labeled professional, but can obviously be used by everyday and ordinary people.

These particular binoculars have an 8x magnification ability. This is simply the power of magnification on the binoculars, the 8x magnification means that the object or area you view through the binoculars is going to appear 8x larger or closer. The 8x magnification also means that this is the maximum and minimum magnification power of the binoculars. You cannot view an object or place with a lesser or higher magnification than 8x. If in the binoculars specifications it said 2-8x zoom, only then would it be possible to change magnification from between a 2x zoom to an 8x zoom. The fixed magnification on this particular binocular can be seen as a disadvantage, this is because if you are fairly close to an object, and the 8x zoom is restricting full viewing of the object than you would not be able to reduce the magnification. The only possible solution would be to move further back or buy some binoculars which allow magnification modifications.

Although, 8x zoom on a binocular is hardly professional, professionals tend to use binoculars with higher magnification prowess such as 15x zoom - 25x zoom. The quality of the viewing area on a binocular depends on lens and prism optical quality, mechanical and alignment quality and design quality. As far as I know these particular binoculars use a high-density Bak-4 prism, which accounts for the lens and prism quality. Olympus have taken great care in the mechanical and alignment quality of these binoculars, although its design quality is not very good. The high-density Bak-4 prism as well as the good mechanical and alignment quality of these very binoculars means that it produces bright, high contrast and fairly sharp images. The very good mechanical and alignment quality means that very light components have been put together with precision to produce an overall light piece of kit.

The Olympus 8X25 WPI would be a great inclusion for camping trips to areas where there is a lot of water and may involve a lot of water based activities. The reason for it being waterproof is the utilization of a particular type of prism. The prism that is used is known as a roof prism. This type of prism is compact and can be used to make very light binoculars. The use of nitrogen within the binoculars alongside the prism and other components makes it water-proof. Also an O-ring is used to seal the focal points of the binoculars and then purged (filled) with nitrogen to prevent water from entering the binoculars. Being waterproof there is a limit of how deep into water binoculars can go. Most waterproof binoculars in the Olympus 8X25 WPI's range tend to be waterproof until they get to a depth of over 2 meters. This is because the lens within the binoculars is made out of glass and due to glass being fragile and taking into account the pressure of the above 2 meter water depth the lens is bound to shatter.

The viewing end of the binoculars also known as the eye-relief area is adjustable to give you maximum comfort when using the binoculars. There is also a large focus knob in between the eye-relief area as to allow easy focus adjustments on not so easy to see objects. Along with the focus knob you get built-in dioptric correction, which basically allows you the user to adjust the optical instrument (lens) in order for it to be compatible with your level of eyesight. Different eyesights need different adjustments of the dioptric correction in order to efficiently focus on any given object. Adjusting the dioptric correction to suit your eyes reduces the chances of eye strain and allows and optimum viewing experience.

Finally, with the lens size being considerably small (25mm) the Olympus 8X25 WPI binoculars are only good for viewing experiences in good lighting conditions. In lower light conditions it may become more difficult to make out objects and determine colours. But with the use of the Bak-4 prism, the small size of the lens is deemed unimportant.

All-in-all the Olympus 8X25 WP I binoculars are great for camping trips or for destinations with pleasant views. And with the range of features to make your viewing experience all the more easier as well as being waterproof, it can prove to be money well spent. Other binoculars, which are in the same price range are fairly similar but have the disadvantage of not being waterproof. There are also may better than this but have a price tag which exceeds over £200. It is stated that the Olympus 8X25 WP I binoculars are intended for professional use, but I like to think of them as all round use for everyday people. This is because for the range of features you are getting a good deal and also because Olympus provide a 25 year guarantee with all their binoculars.
