...Which led me to the Olympus C-370 zoom. Priced at £91 at amazon it sneaked under the £100 limit I had set myself and the decision was taken.
On arrival I was staggered by the size of the package. There surely wasn't a digital camera in a pack that small? This camera is compact to say the least. At 8.8 cm x 3.9 cm x 6.3 cm and weighing 140g it fits into most bags and pockets discreetly. Batteries and xd card (not supplied) inserted ... ...is at the top of the camera and it isn't easy to knock. Powering on switches the camera on ready to take pictures, if you want to view pictures you press a button by the side of the screen. Red camera symbol for taking pictures. Green arrow symbol for playing them. Couldn't be easier for someone like me. At the side of the camera is a wheel to allow you to choose the most appropriate setting for the picture to take. These include Auto, portrait, ... more
My previous digital camera was a 1.3 megapixel Casio that cost a hideous amount of money and took about 3 pictures before the replacement of 4 AA batteries was necessary so I was highly relieved when it was dropped and a new one was required.
Then came the hard work. When I last bought a digital camera things were so much easier. You just bought the one with the biggest number of of pixels at a price you were comfortable with right? Not so now. Digital cameras seem to do so much more than they used to and I had a real problem deciding what was essential and what was just useful.
This camera was primarily to be used for taking pictures for Ebay so a really high resolution camera seemed a luxury I could not justify. Far more useful would be the ability to take close up pictures with ease and an optical rather than a digital zoom.

At 8.8 cm x 3.9 cm x 6.3 cm and weighing 140g it fits into most bags and pockets discreetly. Batteries and xd card (not supplied) inserted and away we go.

Green arrow symbol for playing them. Couldn't be easier for someone like me. At the side of the camera is a wheel to allow you to choose the most appropriate setting for the picture to take. These include Auto, portrait, landscape, night scene, self portrait and movie.
The macro, brightness and timer settings are accessed from a fourway rocker switch with an OK button on the rear of the camera and there are three other buttons below the screen for flash, deleting images and settings.
All actions are clearly displayed in an on-screen menu system. It's a very intuitive system, I haven't had to refer to the book once since checking what all the symbols mean. The display is a crystal clear 1.5" screen.
Two AA batteries take a lot of pictures compared to my old camera. I can't really say how many because I'm a great one for deleting shots straight away and retaking them. You can use rechargeable batteries if you wish.
Image quality is fine. Superfine images are at 2048x1536 but there are other options for storage down to 640x480. Images are stored as jpg's and it's easy to transfer images to the pc via usb port or using an xd card reader as I do.
The camera is PictBridge compatible so you can print directly from the camera with an appropriate printer. All the cables you need are in the box.
It also takes videos but there is no option of recording sound and I haven't found it necessary to try yet.
The only accessories you get are the cables and a handstrap. A case would be useful but it's a tough little camera and it hasn't scratched yet without one.
This is a great entry level camera for most users. You won't get a professional quality portrait from it and landscape shots can get a bit blurry on zoom but you really need a higher resolution camera for that sort of work. This is the digital equivalent of a mid range autofocus point and shoot camera but it does a bit more.
I love it for it's ease of use, size and sturdiness and the quality of the images it produces and I'd recommend it to anyone
Advantages: Easy to get started, long battery life, great quality close-ups Disadvantages: Low capacity for high-quality photos
This was the first 'proper' digital camera I purchased. Previously, I had one of the first without a screen - very annoying! I purchased this on recommendation and haven't looked back since.
The best qualities of this camera are it's easy to navigate menus, and it's 'logic'. By this, I mean that you can pretty much pick up the camera and shoot great quality photos without even opening the instruction book. The settings symbols are obvious: the flash ... ...the delete has a waste bin. Simple!
I bought the camera really for ebay use - I have a business there. It's perfect for this as I'm never far from the computer to transfer the images. However, if you're going to take this camera on holiday with you (or to a special event) you're going to need a memory card purchased separately. That's because, in high-quality mode, you only get 17 photographs in the memory - not many if you're away from a computer.

Advantages: picture qualit, features, ease of use, size. Disadvantages: shutter lag slightly annoying but nothing to worry about.
The Olympus c-370, great simple digital camera.
Photo quality:
This is something that I have found to be very good on this particular camera, although it is an only 3.2 mega pixel which isnt the highest ever, it is still a good amount and as this camera undoubtedly proves, mega pixels arent everything. There are very well balanced colors which look very natural, also the brightness is very well balanced and is easily changed by the brightness ... ...cheap small and with the Olympus make cards; it allows the camera to take panoramic shots which is a very good feature.
Disadvantages:
The only fault which I can find with the camera is the shutter lag and the time it takes to heat up the flash. This is something that is to be expected on cheaper cameras and can get annoying when taking wildlife shots but in most situations this is not much of a problem and does not out weigh the outstanding good ...

...did it all with an Olympus C370.
In fact I'd say I took them all with the same camera but due to my own stupidity, my camera fell out of my pocket onto concrete. Needless to say it was curtains for the camera and a trip to the insurance company for me.
That's not to say these cameras aren't durable, they are! My camera got damp in fiords, fell off my kitchen units and was carted to the other side of the world with no ill effects before its untimely ... ...pictures, obviously how many you get on your card depends on the size of your card. For quality I took 'High Quality' although there is a Super High Quality, it wasn't necessary for my holiday snaps. High quality gives you nice crisp images which display well both on computer and when printed. The optical zoom is fantastic as its retains resolution which is lost using digital zoom.
The different settings such as , night vision, self portrait, lanscape ...

Advantages: Great entry level Digital Camera Disadvantages: Video mode eats batteries, small amount of quality storage.
I've been a dedicated user of "Proper" film using 35mm SLR cameras for many years, and was very dubious of going digital.
So with this in mind i didn't want to spend too much on my first Digital camera, in case i didn't like it. But like it i do!
The C370 was a reverlation. Very compact and easy to use with the possibility of taking very nice pictures. A little gripe is that the onboard storage capacityof the highest resolution pictures is limited ... ...not completely necessary feature(for me at least) is the ability to take short, soundless video clips. The only problem being that it does use battery life very quickly. You will also need high capacity batteries to get maximum life and user time.
The macro settings are very nice and get incredibly close up to small objects. I was also impressed with the facility to take pictures in poor, artificial light. Colour balance is very neutral and pictures ...

Advantages: Pocket-sized, easy to use, great price Disadvantages: exposure in dimly situations not perfect, small zoom, no audio with video
...toy is rather how the Olympus feels in your hand. It's very dinky and light, but the body is well made and looks pretty durable.
There is a range of feature from portrait to night mode, which are available at the turn of the mode dial. The shutter release button is well positioned. There's no eye-viewer and while the LCD screen is perfectly good enough for the job I like to hold a camera to face and compose the picture by looking directly at it, ... ...themselves were sharp and the flash had pretty good coverage. The let down was in poorly lit indoor conditions when the flash gave the photos a slightly yellow tinge.
The night mode performed well, with the use of a tripod or convenient wall I was able to get night-time shots using ambient light to bring out the background.
There's a 3x optical zoom, which should be sufficient for most people's needs and the camera comes with all the leads, batteries ...

good value, good mode selection, good quality, well built, canon quality, good battery life, good resolution and quality, good manual controls, good LCD
clumpy, clunky design and controls, too big to be a true compact, interface pauses, zoom irritating, not worth the upgrade from G3 (*)
