Two years have passed since I purchased my Olympus Camedia C-830L and it is still flawless and takes abfab pics. I paid nealy £400 for it and it has been well worth the investment. I was looking for a camera to take digital photographs for building my own website to sell antiques collectables and curios. Also I required pictures to post to ebay auction site. At first I was just going to buy a cheapy at around £150 but was talked out of it by a good salesman...I am sure glad I listened to him. The quality of the pictures at 1.3 million pixels is excellent even at todays standards and the camera has paid for itself over and over with superb shots of items for sale on the web.
The camera is robust and extremely well built and has sustained some real punishment from me, I was dubius obout the strength of the flimsy looking plastic flip-lid cover over the video out ports but this was unfounded. It came with Camedia imaging software and Camedia photoalbum software and a 4mb smartmedia card containing software for panoramic imaging and capable of storing 43 standard quality pictures each around 50~60kb. On the high quality setting it is capable of 12 pics 175~200kb or 6 super high quality at around 350~400kb. I have bought some higher capacity smartmedia cards that are now so cheap...an 8mb card holds about 120 standard shots.
It is so easy to use...for standard shots just point and click....but beware of the slight delay...one of the only drawbacks, the shot is not instant when you hit the button...but just keep hitting it over and over, as you can immediateky delete unrequired shots using the built in colour viewer. I find most useful the self focusing macro image setting for extremely close up shots....excelent for revealing detail to a prospective purchaser.
Other useful features are anti red eye, timer, zoom, manual flash over ride, rapid sequence shots...for moving objects video out to your tv for both stills and as a video camera.
It uses 4 AA batteries, I use rechargeable ones keeping a set on standby at all times. I have both cheap "value pack" rechargeable batteries and expensive nickel hydrides and cannot notice any distinguishable difference in performance.
I have no need or desire to upgrade yet, there are only two slight disappointments one being the affore-mentioned delay and the other that the photo album software is not windows XP compatable (but what is?)XP has it's own slightly laborious programe that does the job.
So, if you see one of these cameras or a similar model in the Olympus range for sale I would highly recommend it either new or second hand. Two years on they are selling at about £150~200 new.
Advantages: Ease of use Disadvantages: Battery life
...an excellent camera. This Olympus is very easy to use with a simple point and click system. It comes with an in built flas and useful finger guard to stop you from obscuring the lens.
1.3m pixels meant nothing to me, but it is certainly high enough resolution for my needs. There are three different quality levels. The highest only allows three shots per memory card, but is certainly up to SLR standard. High quality gives 6 shots, and standard allows ... ...to your pc.
The Olympus does eat batteries, and you should always carry 4 spare AA batteries with you. You can extend battery life by not using the viewing screen.
I have dropped the camera several times, and it withstood all surfaces. It is bigger than my old compact Olympus SLR, and is too heavy for anything other than a combat pants pocket.
I would certainly recommend this camera to the novice user. ...

...a short report on the Olympus camedia C-830L digital camera. Free with certain computers such as Tiny, or buy it new for around £150 (and dropping!). The camera has 1.3 million pixels and the picture quality is as good as you would want from any camera. The down side to the camera is that the batteries last no time at all, if you take the camera out with you make sure you have plenty of spare batteries. ...

Advantages: Price, Ease of use, Savings on developing. Disadvantages: Usually comes with a 4mb memory card you need 8.
I bought my new Camedia 830L Digital camera, from a british based on line auction for £161.00, what a bargain! I did my homework and looked at a number of different quality cameras but at the price and for taking what in essence are family snaps this is the camera for me. Your almost gauranted a master piece each time you use it. I used to only get a couple of decent picture out of each film with my slr camera, and it cost me a fortune in processing. Thats all a thing of the past, you can really have some fun with this camera, its not too complicated yet produces brilliant pictures in all sorts of conditions. If you get one its worth buying the 8mb memory card, otherwise youll soon be full up. Downloading is ...
