Advantages: Full semi-pro SLR functionallity, fraction of the cost of an E520 Disadvantages: Only 8 Megapixel and possibly a little slower than the 520
...two generations behind the current Olympus SLR offerings, it’s still a remarkably competent piece of kit– the fact that the newest equipment offers ‘more for less’ means older models can be had on the second hand market at very reasonable prices (although that’s tough luck if you’re selling!)
A typical E-500 body will set you back around £150 on Ebay these days (March 2009) – little more than a high-spec compact, but what does that ... ...already had a collection of Olympus compatible lenses, the bayonet mount on the current range of cameras isn’t directly compatible – although adapters are available for manual lenses for around twenty quid on Ebay.
At it’s heart is an 8 megapixel sensor – current models in the Olympus range are 10 – to be honest though – it’s unlikely that you’d notice a great deal of difference in about 80% of shots.
Digital SLR cameras – once the exclusive preserve of professionals, are rapidly becoming commonplace – this older model is still worth consideration for the keen amateur.
The Single Lens Reflex camera came of age in the 1960s in 35mm terms at least – digital photography for the masses only became a reality about seven or eight years ago, and whilst the bottom and top ends of the market were quickly provided for, a half decent inexpensive model in the midrange was remarkably difficult to find.
In spite of the E-500 being two generations behind the current Olympus SLR offerings, it’s still a remarkably competent piece of kit– the fact that the newest equipment offers ‘more for less’ means older models can be had on the second hand market at very reasonable prices (although that’s tough luck if you’re selling!)
A typical E-500 body will set you back around £150 on Ebay these days (March 2009) – little more than a high-spec compact, but what does that mean in terms of value for money?
What you get is a camera body fashioned very much in the likeness of a 35mm camera.
The ‘four-thirds’ sensor element is about half the size of standard 35mm negative – meaning focal lengths will be correspondingly shorter for a given angle of view – so ‘standard’ 50mm translates to approximately 25mm in the new format.
Unfortunately for people who already had a collection of Olympus compatible lenses, the bayonet mount on the current range of cameras isn’t directly compatible – although adapters are available for manual lenses for around twenty quid on Ebay.
At it’s heart is an 8 megapixel sensor – current models in the Olympus range are 10 – to be honest though – it’s unlikely that you’d notice a great deal of difference in about 80% of shots.
Noise reduction on the camera is supposedly not quite as good (that roughly translates to ‘grain’ in conventional terms) although at a push you could store your images in uncompressed format and do all the ‘tweaks’ on your PC with third party software.
It’s always tempting to assume ‘newest is best’ when going for high tech equipment, and whilst that can often be true, ‘not so new’ can often be ‘good enough’ and represent considerably better value for money.
The camera supports two memory formats; ‘Compact flash’ which is one of the best established (ie oldest) forms still in common use and the proprietary XD format developed by Olympus and Fuji.
Neither is especially cheap when compared to the ubiquitous SD format, but as you can re-use your card many thousands of times, the cost differential becomes meaningless.
It’ll also support the IBM/Hitachi microdrive, although given the relatively high cost (and high battery drain) it would only be of interest of you already had this medium.
The built in flash offers practical, if slightly limited use, the provision of a ‘hot shoe’ connection allows you to use a more powerful unit at some later stage (I’ve even tried a very old Quick Auto-310)
The controls and menuing system offer a degree of familiarity to existing Olympus users – I found that moving from a C-8080-WZ a relatively straightforward process.
Several versions of firmware are in circulation, when installed the driver CD was able to identify the very latest versions available from the Olympus site and downloaded them flawlessly – it’s worth noting that the lenses have their own processor, and firmware, so to be absolutely on top of things you should check this with ALL your options fitted.
Olympus have developed an extensive range of lenses to support this camera body, there’s two standard units which were sold with the body – the 14-45mm which provides wise-angle to short telephoto (28-90mm equivalent) and 40-150mm (80-300mm equivalent) with a reasonable level of overlap.
The cost of a good second hand outfit of a body, two lenses, a memory card and battery would be just over the £200 mark.
There’s a couple of niggles with the camera, and it’s up to you to decide whether or not they’re sufficiently important to justify paying twice as much for the current models;
8 megapixels is not quite as good as 10, although for many (including myself) that’s plenty.
I believe the autofocus mechanism isn’t as fast, but that’s relative.
You don’t have a ‘live preview’ function where you can see the image on the LCD screen before you press the shutter button – although the optical viewfinder still operates normally.
On balance I would suggest for these small compromises, this is still a perfectly respectable camera the lenses of which offer compatibility with the current range.
The ideal users of this camera would either be people on a tight budget, or as a spare for current owners of the newer models.
You won’t get the latest ‘whizz-bang’ features, but given the considerable advantages of price, this is a very noteworthy camera.
Advantages: Great features, sensor cleaning, sexy looks, great lcd viewer, dual card memory Disadvantages: limited choice of lenses (currently)
...loved the crispness of the Olympus lenses.
This camera is a great \'do-it-all\' machine. It\'s simple to use, it has some great features which are easy to find and it looks sexy. The images it produces are sharp and usually have great colour rendition. A good point is that it has two different memory card holders using exactly the same type of cards as the Fuji meaning it is a good step up for Fuji owners who don\'t want to have to buy replacement ... ...40-150mm lenses and also the Olympus Fl-36 flash. All the products have performed perfectly and given me some great shots. Operating the camera can be as complicated or simple as you want. There is an idiot mode which will give you great point and shoot images or there is the ability to control every aspect of the camera exposure. Somewhere in the middle are varying degrees of fun.
Battery life is incredible. The camera will last for ages and ages ...

Advantages: Superb quality Photo's Disadvantages: Increased noise at high ISO's
I've owned an Olympus E500 for two years now and can only say good things about it!
I've found it takes superb photos at a very high quality. It sits comfortably in the hand, and has a nice weight to it, something which can be lacking in some of the other models on the market. The only slight draw back is the level of noise when shooting at high ISO's, typically above 500. However this isn't an issue most of the time.
The level of available lenses ... ...The interface on the camera is logical and easy to navigate.
I recently took it travelling with me on a gap year, and looking through my photos on getting home I felt like I was back in all the places I'd visited!
A very good camera capable of taking superb quality photos! A very good choice! ...

Advantages: Light weight, good range of functions, dust reduction system. Disadvantages: Only just adequate in low light conditions.
I bought this camera around 18 months ago and have found it to be reliable so far. The 'dust shake' mechanism that activates when you switch it on helps prevent dust build-up on the sensor which has to be a major plus point.
This is my first digital slr although I am familiar with film slr cameras and, also, basic compact digital cameras. I found that the transition to more advanced digital photography relatively simple with the E500.
The E500 ... ...it impinges on the ingegrity of the camera. The photographer is in control of complexity of use:from fully manual to automatic with useful priority modes in between. There are also 'scene' modes......effictively automatic settings which are tailored to very particular situations eg.'Night and Portrait' and 'Beach or snow'. I have also found the 'documents' mode to be useful and have produced some images which are almost as clear and printable as ...

Advantages: Light weight, quite easy to use Disadvantages: detailed manual comes as a disk no hard copy
...on line I found the Olympus E-500. I have to say what attracted me was the complete outfit that came with it. Camera body, 17.5-45mm zoom lens, 40-150mm zoom lens. 1GB memory card, compact photo printer and a bag to bring it all home in. (I also did a deal with a different printer and got a rechargeable battery and charger thrown in, and extra money off)
The positives are that this camera is simple to use for the basics, it take a little reading ... ...It has the usual setting of a good quality SLR e.g. fully manual; aperture priority, shutter speed priority, as well as several pre set 'auto settings'. It has its built in fill-in flash and also has a 'traditional hot shoe' (unlike Minolta). The picture can be taken up to 8-mega pixels, stored also as tiff files, raw files or a mixture. There are some negatives with this camera, maybe a little of my ignorance as well. Having had digital cameras ...

Quick review of Olympus E-500
Excellent entry level digital SLR. I bought it with a 17-35mm lens and 40-70mm lens. These are really all you need to get started. The range of accessories available is vast from with extra lenses, to flashguns. The 8 million megapixel sensor is what you would expect from an entry level camera, with its noise in low light being quite high. Working at around ISO 400, excellent photographs can be captured. The pop up flash is also surprisingly good. All in all, I would recommend this camera as a great entry level SLR for the photographer wishing to take that step up from compact cameras. ...

Advantages: Very fast write speed, Low energy consuption. Inexpensive. Disadvantages: Small capacity relative to new camera capabilities
I bought this card along with my Olympuse-500 camera as it was recommended by the seller from whom I bought it. The recommendation was quite good as the card was relatively inexpensive and is very quick writing to the card, there is little if any storage lag. Energy consumption is low relative to other cards on the market, particularly cards by cheaper manufacturers such as Kingston. This card supports all types of data however to access this functionality a USB connector is required. This particular model of the card is quickly becoming obsolete because of the relatively small amount of datait can hold. Sandisk has similar cards on the market now that can store up to 16 times the amount this card can. However, the card is cheap and is still a very reliable and fast card for use perhaps as a backup or overflow card. ...
Advantages: completely automatic when coupled to the E series Olympus, two batteries, very adaptable Disadvantages: Can be slow to recharge when using nimh batteries
A great medium power flash which synchronises perfectly with the Olympus Evol series of digital cameras. I have used it with my E-500 and the results are pretty good. Like the camera, the more you understand what it does the better you can make use of it.
There are several modes available to the user including forced flash, fill-in and normal. The flash automatically recognises what focal length the zoom lens is and adjusts its flash level accordingly. In use this has been faultless. Its always been accurate and the flash level has been right for the zoom.
Unlike many flashes, this one only uses two batteries (AA) which means its quite cheap to run and its easy to have spares in your bag. The head is completely flexible giving full rotation and tilt up to vertical. There is a small diffuser for ultra wide angle which stores away ...

controls to overwhelm novice DSLR users.
Overall this 'minimal design works well, especially as Nikon includes direct access to the camera settings displayed on the bright 2.5 inch LCD in a similar fashion to the OlympusE-500. As a result there's no great reliance on the menus and making changes to the shooting settings is a simple button push away.
To further simplify and explain things there's a built in 'help' menu (similar to having the instruction manual on hand) and neat graphics to show when you might want to use a particular setting.
Other commendable traits include the camera's viewfinder, which is simply excellent. Like the company's D80 it is large and bright, with easy-to-read information that doesn't disappear under bright conditions.
On the downside, the AF isn't quite as hot as the other models. For starters the 3 ...
