For anyone using photo editing software it also allows picture taking in camera raw mode.
The one drawback I have come across is the slow reaction to the shutter press and occasionally the auto focus gets it wrong, but overall, well ... ...reasonable using 4 AA ones. I make sure that I have at least 8 fully charged batteries with me though if I intend to do a heavy session.
Movie mode is great with "in movie" zoom as standard, but does tend to use up the battery life quite quickly.
I strongly recommend that anyone purchase at least Paint Shop Pro XI for image editing due to the amount of Digital noise associated with this form of photography. ... more

The battery life is reasonable using 4 AA ones. I make sure that I have at least 8 fully charged batteries with me though if I intend to do a heavy session.

In terms of value and features for money, the sp510 is probably the best camera in its class.
Ideal for someone looking to do more than just snapshots, but not wanting to fork out hundreds on a digital SLR, the sp510 is a so called bridge or prosumer camera that attempts to offer the best of both worlds.
For example the camera has a number of modes from fully automatic - where the camera takes care of all settings, you just frame your shot and ... ...length, aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
There are also a number of scene modes - with settings tailored to particular circumstances such as portraits, sports or night shots. Some of these are a little gimmicky, but the shoot and select mode, which takes a number of shots in quick succession and allows you to choose which ones to keep has proved useful for me.
Compared to other prosumer cameras the sp510 is cheap, yet its still well equipped. The ...

All in all the camera is a great piece of imaging equipment, ideal for keen amateurs, semi-pros or people who enjoy being creative.
There is a new model from Olympus, the SP-510UZ, which is the updated version of the SP-500UZ. The new model has the same features as the SP-500UZ with a few improvements:
A higher quality 7.1 Mega Pixel sensor
A much needed image stabilizer mechanism
An optional remote control shutter release for taking shots
from a distance.
I have not had the chance to test the new SP-510UZ, so other than telling you the new spec, I don't know much else. Although from the pictures I've seen of the new model it does look like the same camera!! It may be a good idea to look at the new model before making any decisions on purchasing the SP ...

The SP550UZ from Olympus is an upgrade from the 500 and 510 models, I previously owned the 500 model and I found a couple of problems with it:
1: The camera did not include an image stabilizer.
2: Everything was made from cheap plastic.
However the 550 includes a mechanical image stabilizer, so any camera shake from a pair of unsteady hands wont be a problem. This is a massive necessity especially when using the full 18x zoom. In addition the camera can be set to a high ISO setting to help aid sharp images. Also the build quality has been improved massively since the earlier models.
There is also a number of additional accessories which can be purchased for the 550UZ, I don't have much information to share on all these ...
