After being on numerous outings over last summer, and only having a very standard 35mm film camera to use, I was getting frustrated with not being able to show offmy photos, having the fairly incompetent assistants at Morrisons develop my snaps the wrong way round, and having to pay for a copy of the photo of the inside of my camera case. So when push came to shove, I decided to go digital.
Currently there are lots of excellent compact digital cameras on the market, from many different brands. However I am a firm believer that Olympus are probably still the best photographic device manufacturers around. They provide good, reliable products, at competitive prices and offer excellent support and other services. So Olympus cameras were my first port of call.
I was looking to spend between £150 -£200 on a comapact digital camera, that I could take out with me on holidays, outtings and even just nights out with mates, that wouldn't get in the way, and was easy to use. I also wanted a camera with 5 or more megapixels and a video function.
A few cameras filled my limited specifications or came very close but I eventually chose the mju digital 600 because of its superior night shot ability, and its general look.

To most people, the majority of these facts and figures will mean very little; in which case I'll give a quick summary of the need to know features:
Its got 6.0 megapixels, so the image quality is very good
Its got a big screen on the back (2.5") so you can see, clearly, what your taking a picture of, which is especially good in dark surroundings due to special technology.
Its got 3x optical zoom (so when taking a photo you can zoom in up to 3x as close) and its got 5x digital zoom (so once you've gone as close as you can by zooming, you can then increase the pixels' size by up to 5 times, in effect stretching the image to 5 times its original size) giving you an overal zoom ability of 15x.
It has an 8mb "hard drive" and you can purchase additional memory cards for it (ranging from 16mb to 1gb)
Its got autofocus, a great flash, and lots of different modes to alter how and when the flash/red-eye light goes off depending on your situation, ie: a night scene, a portrait, under water, through glass, etc., to make sure your photos are as good a quality as possible.
It stores videos as Quicktime motion JPEG files
Without an additional memory (just with the 8mb internal memory) th camera will save between 2 and 46 photos, depending on the quality and the size of the picture.
It has a lithium rechargeable battery, so you can charge it without it being fully empty.
Its splashproof, so you can use it in the rain with getting electicuted
And thats pretty much it =)
-------Overall---------------------------------------------
The camera is excellent! Its small enough for me to carry in my pocket when I go to clubs etc. with my friends. I feel safe enough due to its robustness and weatherproof ability to take it out to rugby matches and to clubs etc at University. The computer software for moving photos on and off the camera and editing tools are really good and very easy to use. Also the noise it makes when you turn it on and off, due to the lens cover sliding back and force is superb! You have to hear it to believe it!
The only bad points that I can think of are; sometimes I feel the buttons on the back could be a little bigger, but to be honest its not a real problem and the fact that it doesn't come with a case, but you can easily pick one of these up from Dixons or any other electrical retailer.
My camera cost £172, but you can find it for cheaper I think, from some internet sites. Definitely worth every penny!

Advantages: Large LCD making it easy to frame the shot and view the pictures you've taken. Disadvantages: A couple of features don't quite (yet) make sense to a beginner like me!
