I'm quite a picky one when it comes to buying expensive items of kit. I want a lot for my money!
I had been using my casio digital camera for the past five years so I was well past an update - it was only 3.2 mega pixels, my daughters phone is double that now! Anyway the rechargeable battery was no longer holding its charge so it was time for an upgrade.
I created a tick list of the features that I would like my new camera to have, but it boiled down to the fact that I wanted everything, all in one package!
I enjoy skiing so was looking for something to that could handle the rough and tumble of the slopes (I'm not very good, so falling is an occupational hazzard - you don't want a smashed camera in your pocket) The Olympus Mju 1030 ticked that box - it's shock proof and metal cased.
It obviously gets pretty cold on the top of those mountains, so I was looking for something that could handle the elements - another tick, the Mju is resistant to cold up to - 10 degrees.
I wanted something that looked good. I am a gadget fan, but whats the point of having one if you are embarrassed to get it out of your pocket. The Mju again ticks this box and is available in a choice of different colours, from silver, to black to green. I went for the black, hoping it will be timeless - okay that's a lie, I wanted the green one but for some reason it was a bit more expensive!
I wanted something with a lot of pixels. I print quite a few of my pictures out in A4 and my previous 3.2mp camera struggled at this size. Another tick for the Mju, at 10.7 mp I could make wallpaper out of any picture (not literally, but hopefully you get what I mean).
I wanted something that could help me take great pictures, especially of family and friends (I'm more of a people person for my memories rather than landscapes). Yet another tick, it has face recognition technology and picks out faces and makes sure that the lighting levels are automatically adjusted accordingly.
Cameras are only little things these days and carrying a tripod is not exactly my bag, but I still want a steady non blurred picture. Tick, digital image stabiliser built in. It also has a 3.6 optical zoom that doesn't actually stick out of the camera, so there is less chance of any damage or big time battery drainage. By the way, regarding the battery, I don't know exactly how long it lasts, but when we went skiing, I went with it charged, took over 200 pictures and didn't have to charge it! No batteries to swap over either, it's a rechargeable lithium type. I always find these much better and longer lasting.
And finally the big one. Wouldn't it be great if you had a camera that you could jump into the pool with?!! Not one that went into some silly kind of plastic bag contraption, just a normal camera that will take underwater pictures. Guess what......tick, this camera is waterproof to ten metres, brilliant for the swimming pool. You can take some amazing pictures that you wouldn't have dreamt of before!
Put all of the above together and the great news about this camera is it is pretty bullet proof. You can drop it, step on it, submerge it or freeze it and it will still work. Just have to hope I don't lose it, that seems to be the only thing Olympus hadn't thought of.
It is expensive. I paid £235 + another £12 for a memory card, but I'm looking at this bad boy lasting. If I can get 5 years out of it and 100's of memories then it will have been a bargain.
I love it and if you are looking to tick all the same boxes as me then I am more than happy to recommend it.

Advantages: All weather build, great results Disadvantages: No remote
...I already have an Olympus E-510 with a 14-54mm zoom lens that produces good quality pics, but is not puddle-proof.
It does use XD cards though so I already had some to use in the 1030SW - No card is supplied with the 1030SW (These Xd type M version cards are available at about £8.50 for a 1g)
A 1g Xd card in the 1030SW set to max resolution gives you 205 shots.
So seeing the Olympus 1030SW I was 1st drawn to its waterproof quality etc.
I did ... ...convenient than my Leica or Olympus E-510, just a bit bigger than a mobile phone.
Also when using camera the lens does not stick out even when using the zoom,
You can start producing pics immediately after charging the supplied battery that takes about 1.5 hours. After reading the manual you find other features like face recognition and an image stabilizer that are a
surprise, to me on such a small camera. There's even an alarm clock and a manometer ...

Advantages: Good when works!!! Disadvantages: Breaks in the water!!!! - expensive to repair
At first when i got this camera I loved it, it takes really good clear photographs, and in water too, I got some really cool shots in my swimming pool.. HOWEVER the battery cover somehow opened and water got inside and all of a sudden that was it. Never worked again, and before you think, it was carelessness, it was not, I was very careful and at the end of the day it’s meant to be an active sporty camera. So anyway cut a long story short, i sent ... ...However the result came back telling me 'it was due to my carelessness' and they would not repair the damage. It was going to cost £230 to get it repaired. 'i paid something like £280 so i really didn’t see the point. I would not get another one, as i know a few people who this same thing has happened to. So i don’t trust them in water. And you can get a lot of cameras just as good (out of water) for much cheaper. ...

I love photography and known to friends as expert photographer. I have been using this camera for almost 1 year. I am satisfied of this product since this is one of a kind camera [pocket] that easily dive in water... this is amazing. I have been very careful with my other camera since i am worried that it drop and got sprinkled with water when my kids are playing with it.
