Full review

I bought this camera a couple of years ago now and while technology has moved on and has made this nowhere near as good as some of the other cameras available on the market now, it has made it more affordable as prices have come down and it is still really good for me and does everything I want it to! It would be a perfect camera for somebody who doesn't know much about photography as it is so easy to use and understand and isn't too sophisticated while still taking great pictures!

**Features**

The camera as 4 megapixels. This relates to the quality of images you can take - the higher the number of megapixels the better it is if you want to enlarge the photo. With 4 megapixels I take photos on "High quality" which is the 2nd best below "Superior High Quality" and I have blown these up to A4 with no problems and the pictures look really good and not grainy at all. I would say you could probably go upto A3 size on Superior Quality without losing quality of your photo. If you wanted to go bigger, you'll need a camera with more megapixels.

This camera has 3x optical zoom and 3x digital zoom. Optical zoom relates to how much you can zoom in when taking the photo i.e. if you are standing 10m away you can zoom right in on it, this doesn't affect the quality of the photo you take. Digital zoom allows you to zoom in the photo when it has already been taken. With this camera you can zoom in so anything in the photo is 3x bigger, if you zoom in anymore you start to lose the quality of the image.

The camera has a re-chargeable battery which was one of the main things I was looking for in my new digital camera as when I was traveling with a friend, hers took AA batteries and didn't even last a day as these cameras use so much battery. If you think how much it would cost you to go through a couple of AA batteries every time you took 100-200 photos I think a rechargeable one is better. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery and has always lasted me weekends away when I have taken lots of photos (approx 500) but obviously how much you use it and whether you use the flash or not depends on how long the battery lasts.

The camera takes an XD Memory Card. I have 128MB and it allows me to take 145 photos at High Quality setting which is the one I use. These days you can get 1GB memory cards which would allow you to take almost 900 photos on this setting. Be aware though that if you did lose the card or your camera you have lost all the photos so I recommend getting them off and put onto your PC or a CD as soon as possible. Also 900 photos on the high setting would be too big to fit on 1 CD so bear this in mind as well, maybe a 500MB card would be more suitable - it depends when and where you are going to use it. If you go traveling in remote areas it may not be possible to get your photos off easily so it is advisable to get as big a card as you can afford.

**Settings**

Movie
You can record movies with sound for upto 90 seconds low quality and 20 seconds high quality. The number of videos you can store depends on the size of your memory card but the camera will only capture utpo 90 or 20 seconds at a time respectively. My only issue with this feature is that you can't use the zoom function whilst videoing, I assume because it makes a noise when it zooms in and out and so would ruin the sound but I'm not sure!

Program Auto
Just point and shoot!

Portrait
If you are taking pictures of people use this setting as it reduces red-eye.

Indoor
This one would be used for taking pictures of rooms or inside but if you're taking pictures of people indoors then use the portrait function.

Beach and Snow
This filters the light as when you are skiing or in the sunshine on the beach there is usually a lot of reflective light off the snow or the sand and sea. This means the phot doesn't have a "washed out" look.

Cuisine
Used to take photos of food!

Landscape and Portrait
If you are taking pictures of people in front of a landscape this is the one to use.

Landscape
Used for long distance shots of landscapes. Use this one if you are using the panoramic function of the camera which enables you to join as many pictures together as you like, and in any direction you like (i.e. if you are taking photos of a tall building you could use the panoramic function vertically)..

Night Scene
This setting uses a slower shutter speed which allows more light in so the picture doesn't just come out black! When you are using this one, it takes a couple of seconds to actually take the photo because it holds the shutter open for so long. It is taking the photo the whole time though so if you move during taking this it comes out blurred. Therefore when you are using this setting, make sure you are resting the camera on something so it stays still because it is impossible to hold it perfectly still!

Self Portrait
Self explanatory! For taking pictures of yourself, reduces red-eye function when photographing people close up.

**Conclusion**
This has been a great little camera for me and I would never go back to a 35mm camera! Although there is much better technology on the market since I got this one I have no plans to upgrade because this one is great for what I need. I have travelled with this one and taken photos of places I will never go back to and therefore will keep forever, and I have enlarged lots of photos for framing and have been really pleased with the quality so on the whole an excellent little camera!! It cost me £150 two years ago when it was on offer but you could get it much cheaper than that now.

...you must buy the genuine Olympus XD cards if you want to use the "Panorama" function on the camera, other (cheaper) cards such as the Fuji ones, won't let you use this function - more on this function below. I then bought a spare battery (£25) so that I never run out of power - I would advise anyone looking to buy a digital camera to check the price of spare batteries as it makes a world of difference if you aren't able to get to mains electric ... The Olympus u[MJU:] 400 Digital Camera.
Review of Olympus µ[MJU:] 400 Digital by CoolMeg

Advantages: Compact, Lightweight, Stylish and 4.0 megapixels means you can print up to A3, still with a high quality printout.
Disadvantages: No protective case included and the larger xD-Picture Cards are highly priced.

...Then I spotted it, the Olympus u [MJU:] 400 Digital Camera. It was excellent. I liked the look of it as, it was compact and in a tough, hard looking metal case, which meant if I dropped it, it wouldn't break easily. When the staff handed it to me, I couldn't believe how stylish it looked in the polished silver case, plus it was of a small shape and light weight. So, therefore it isn't clumsy. This I thought would be ideal to put in your pocket when ...
...be suitable for all weathers. It included a lens cap built into the main case, which meant you wouldn't need to put it in your pocket to get dirty or put it down and lose it. This is a bit of a problem; as if you close it quick you can trap the lens. When I asked the staff for some extra information they told me: 1) You could create short movies with an easy playback, however there is no sound. 2) You could quick view all the images stored on the ... Excellent Quality at a Fantastic Price
Review of Olympus µ[MJU:] 400 Digital by Paul77

Advantages: Stylish compact design, sturdy metal build, fantastic price.
Disadvantages: No case, manuals only supplied on CD.

In my opinion the Olympus µ[MJU:] 400 is a fantastic little camera, and just because it's small doesn't mean it isn't packed with features. I bought this when I was looking for a small camera to carry around while on my hols. I’ve had an Olympus MJU 35mm camera for years and it’s never let me down so this was the obvious choice when I wanted to go digital. It has all the normal features that you would expect, and none of the gimmicky ones that you ...
...picture cards, specifically designed by Olympus and Fuji for digi camera use. You can get up to 512Mb cards, which can store over 150 pics even in the largest resolution! And finally, the price…. most of the high-street shops were selling this for £350+ but a bit of searching on the internet and I found Amazon, Dixons and PC World all selling it for £260 and at that price you really can’t go wrong. Other little extras make this a great package… ... Read review

...my beady eyes on an Olympus 350 which was on special offer at my local Dixons (a couple of months ago now) For the purposes of continuing research I had a look at a couple of other makes and models and surprise surprise the canny salesman shoved an Olympus mju 400 under my nose – 1st impression, I had to have one. ...them for a numpty like me! For the techies among you, it's a 4 megapixel camera with a combination digital / analogue zoom and XD memory card and a lithium battery One feature I really like compared to other cameras I looked at is the side door which hides and protects the memory card (XD type) the video out and USB ports. That keeps the outer appearance tidy and they won't get damaged. The supplied memory on the basic model is 16mb, enough for ... Read review

Review of Olympus µ[MJU:] 400 Digital by bebcho

Advantages: Looks fantastic. Lots of features
Disadvantages: Blurry pictures and no manual focus.

Olympus MJU:400 stylus 4.0megapixel digital point and shoot camera. The story was my brother had a lovely Konica Revio 3 megapixel digital camera and showed me the true benefits of getting a digital camera. This took superb pictures and looked like a better option that having a still camera and permanently buying film and developing the pictures. It was always random luck whether I liked even a few of what I got back. So saving money and being a ...
