I have been using the Olympus µ[MJU:] 700 Digital Camera for three months now and from my experience of using it I can say that it is a high quality, user friendly and good value compact digital camera. Having never owned a digital camera before, I wanted something easy to use as well as having a durable and stylish body, and producing high quality images. Experience so far has proven that this camera completely fulfils these criteria. The instruction manual has simple and clear diagrams as well as easy to follow instructions that all users, including children could follow without any problems.
This is an all-weather camera so you can take it virtually anywhere, this is due to the rubber gaskets on the interior of the camera which ensure water can't get in and cause damage. However while the camera can easily survive a torrential downpour it is worth noting that it cannot be submerged, although you can purchase an underwater housing for it. The outer body is made of lightweight metal but despite this it is still highly durable. When holding the camera it feels light but sturdy. The overall look is smart and simple yet stylish. Although the camera is small and thin the LCD viewing screen is large at 2.5 inches.
The camera has a 7.1 megapixel image
sensor which produces crisp, clear images. The camera is very quick to start, probably only about a second, and the shutter release is instant so it allows you to capture images without 'missing the moment'. It is possible to turn the camera on and have taken a photo in just two seconds. The camera has a 3x optical zoom lens, generally speaking the higher the optical zoom of a digital camera the better. The camera also has 5x digital zoom, therefore with optical and digital zoom combined, the camera is capable of 15x seamless zooming. I've found the zoom on the camera is perfectly sufficient for my usage and the quality of the image is unaffected. The zooming capabilities of the camera are about standard for a digital camera; they are ideal for the majority of users and would only become insufficient for professional photographers or those who regularly take photos of small subjects from a considerable distance.
The camera has 19.1 megabytes of internal memory which is not a great deal for a camera of this resolution. I was a bit disappointed that Olympus does not provide you with a removable xD card. You have to buy this separately which is slightly annoying but definitely worth investing in. The largest memory card currently available for the camera is 1GB. I haven't filled it up yet but I can safely say that it holds in excess of 300 photos as well as 5 short films, as this is as much as I have taken so far! Obviously once you have put photos onto a computer you can delete them from the card so you should only need to buy one.
The camera has 23 different pre-programmed shooting modes, as well as a filming mode. Rather than listing them I'll analyse the most useful ones. Portrait and landscape are fairly standard and never fail to produce a good quality image. The camera has an indoor and candle setting. While indoor works well for any indoor situation, candle captures the warm glow you get from a candle. I was impressed with this as I'm sure you will know if you have ever taken a photo of a flame with a regular camera it often doesn't have that romantic warm quality to it, whereas taken with this camera it really enhances this effect. Another useful setting is the available light setting which is used for taking photos in lowlight conditions without a flash. Obviously where there is lowlight ideally you would put the camera on indoor mode so it flashes to produce the best image but the available light setting allows you to take photos, for example, of a sleeping baby without waking them up. The sunset and firework settings are fairly self-explanatory and optimise the image under those conditions. The camera also has three underwater settings, so if you purchase the underwater housing, you can optimise the images you take. Having not used these settings I cannot comment on how effective they are but I have used most of the other settings on the camera and I have been really impressed with the results.
When it comes to the viewfinder, the LCD screen has been designed for viewing pictures in any situation. Olympus has incorporated 'HyperCrystal' technology into the screen. The advantage of this is that outdoors, even in really bright conditions you can still easily see things on the screen; also in lowlight conditions it brightens the viewfinder. I am very satisfied with the screen on my camera; the only downside I have found to it is that it is really prone to fingerprints. As the screen comes right to the left side, top and bottom of the rear of the camera I tend to find that whenever I pick it up I get my fingerprints all over the screen. This can easily be solved with a dry cloth though and really it is a minor inconvenience considering the high quality of the screen itself.
With regards to the battery life, it is quite difficult to say how long the battery will last because it largely depends on how much you view back your photos on the screen, how much you use the flash or zoom the camera in and out as this is what uses up the battery. I would say that if I don't playback the pictures at all and rarely use the flash or zoom then I can take about 200 photos on a fully charged battery, if I do play them back, zoom or use flash this is probably reduced to about 150. The battery is about standard for a digital camera of this specification. I find the battery life sufficient but if you are on holiday for example and know you will be taking a lot of photos I would recommend charging the battery every day to ensure it doesn't die on you. It does have a low battery warning sign to alert you when the power is low.
You are provided with a USB cable and the Olympus Master software which I found really simple to use, you can group your photos under a name or by date and the software also has some editing features on it such as cropping and red-eye reduction. It is very user friendly software, like the camera itself. I was disappointed, however, that they do not provide you with a case for the camera. I have bought an Olympus camera before and that came with a case so I was surprised to find that I would have to purchase a case separately for this camera. I would recommend you do not buy the Olympus branded one as it costs about £30! The camera itself is good value for money, even though you do have to buy a memory card separately but to make you buy a case for it too seems rather penny-pinching!
Overall I have been really impressed with the Olympus µ[MJU:] 700. I have used it in many varied situations and have got some excellent pictures as a result of the many different pre-programmed shooting modes. The zoom is very good and does not alter the quality of images, the camera looks and feels superior and is very user friendly. Apart from the minor details I have mentioned, I do not have any major issues with the camera at all. I would highly recommend it.
