Omnipage Pro is the Worlds best selling Optical Recognition Software. Version 11 is no different to this, because it offers enhanced features, more recognised languages and better quality all round. For all you newbies of this type of Software, Optical Character Recognition or OCR is basically where a piece of software can understand what is written or typed on paper that is scanned into the computer.

Version 11 is no different to this, because it offers enhanced features, more recognised languages and better quality all round. For all you newbies of this type of Software, Optical Character Recognition or OCR is basically where a piece of software can understand what is written or typed on paper that is scanned into the computer.
AVAILABILITY AND COST... Believe me, this Software does not come cheap. It retails for £100 or there-abouts from leading stores like Currys, PC World and Argos, but to name a few. My parents where lucky enough to get it half-price from PC World on offer. The older versions of the software are about £20 cheaper.
INSTALLATION... Installation is very easy, taking about 25 minutes. You basically have the option to register the product now or later, then you go onto Language etc - simple steps that anybody could follow. You need about 20MB of disk space free and it runs on Win 95/98/2000/NT/XP.
INTERFACE... Overall, a very easy interface to understand. To retrieve a page from the scanner, you have 3 boxes at the top of the screen, GET PAGE, PERFORM OCR, EXPORT RESULTS. GET PAGE: this is basically what type of scan do you want, colour, Black and White etc. PERFORM OCR: This is the layout of your page, do you want it in a single or double column etc. EXPORT RESULTS: What are you going to do with your document after the scan, save it, print it?
It is very easy to use, and is best for adding things to preprinted pages if you have not saved to original. You can also change styles, colours, swap things around etc. The tool bars are very similar to MS Word or Publisher.
Another feature of this software is the ability to read PDF files and incorporate them into your work. It is also vry accurate and reads even the worst of photocopies for example - it even knows when there is a table or text box on your page.
Yet another feature is the fact that, any page scanned, can be turned into a webpage with WYSIWYG HTML.
Accuracy is also another benefit because 99.6% of the work it does is accurate. It achi8eves this will pinpoint colour retention and recognition as well as the constant updates to the font style database.
LANGUAGES READ... This software recognises over 100 languages including... German, French, English, Greek, Eskimo, Spanish, Swedish and Portugese.
It can read any type of font, you see as soon as it encounters a font it does not understand, the product builds up info on the style and adds it to the database for future reference.
RELIABILITY... OK, sorry to have to say it, but it does tend to crash a lot more on slower Processors, you need at least a 133MhZ processor to run on. Any trouble can be reported to them by contacting the company via www.scansoft.com.
MY OPINION... In my opinion this software is very useful for manipulating already typed pages, aswell as written ones. The amount of extras is great and what is best is that it works with many scanners including Acer, Agfa, Brother, Canon, Compaq, Epson, Fujitsu, HP, Lexmark, Microtek, Mustek, Plustek, Ricoh, UMAX, Visioneer, and Xerox. The only let down is you need a generally fast processor to work it on.

Omnipage 10 is a well established program from Caere. It works with your scanner to convert scanned text into word documents as well as reading it out loud. Caere suppots a variety of layouts and produces very effective results. Don't worry if you don't have word either - rich text format is supported so ANY word processor is supported.
THE INTERFACE
Once you've installed Omnipage and selected your scanner you are met with the programs 3 panes. ... ...button. The great thing about Omnipage is it also supports image decoding, so if you ahve an image on your computer with text in it, Omnipage can convert it for you.
CONVERSION
Conversion is very simple. The tooldbar at the top allows you to select between Auto OCR, Manual OCR and OCR wizard (n.b. for those who don't already know - OCR is the tech term for the technology for converting images to text). Auto OCR is generally the best option, and ...

...in the office we used OmniPage 10 to create editable text and ran this through a translating programme. The results were perfect and understandable, we could then take the appropriate action. Our German expert commented that the programme correctly identified all the text. The programme can cope with many layout varieties including pictures and tables.
I would love to have this programme at home however the main disadvantage of this and all OCR ...
