♦♦♦ Content and Format ♦♦♦
This is aimed at very young, pre-school / nursery age children, given that it is board book format - a firm favourite as little hands can turn the pages themselves without accidentally damaging the pages.
The concept is based on 'little windows', beginning with the front cover. There is a rectangular shaped section cut out of the front cover and indeed each page, with a transparent window placed in this section. On each 'window' there is a picture, almost like a 'transfer' of the duck, her ducklings and some of the animals that they meet on their journey.
The front cover invites the reader to …….'Follow the fluffy ducklings….. On the pond'.
The three ducklings waddle down to the pond, informing their mother that they are off to explore…. On their journey they meet a fish, a frog and a dragonfly who they greet and announce that they are going to swim far, far away…… Finally, to their dismay and their mother's delight they have swam full circle and end up back where they started!
♦♦♦ Illustrations ♦♦♦
The illustrations are made up of actual photographs of the animals and backgrounds relating to the habitat of a pond and the surrounding area, all in a sort of decoupage / collage like effect.
The window sections are the 'special' feature of this book, linking each page with the next.
There are a range of books in this series: ~ At home ~ On the building site ~ In the park ~ In the countryside ~ At the pond ~ On the farm ~ In the jungle ~ On the pond ~ In the sea
ISBN: 0-7513-4365-X costs £4.99 although I got a good deal as I bought a few in the series. I've looked on the DK website, www.dk.com but they don't show, however it is available from www.amazon.co.uk
♦♦♦ My Verdict ♦♦♦
This is a great little book for a number of reasons:
~ Just the right size for little hands to manipulate and handle easily. ~ Board book format to make it easier to turn the pages and less chance of ripping or damaging the pages. ~ Introduces children to different animals that live in or around a pond. ~ Interesting format with the windows within each page
Like the other book I have read in this series, the only negative I have about this book is it's length. Although it is aimed at younger children whose concentration span is generally not as advanced as older ones, I think the author has misjudged the attention span and kept it too limited in length. The photographs and content in my opinion would hold a younger child's attention for much longer than this and without doubt more animals could have been introduced.
