~~~~ Once there were giants ~~~~
Once there were giants is written by Martin Waddell, illustrated by Penny Dale and published by Walker.
~~~~ Martin Waddell ~~~~

Martin Waddell lives with his wife Rosaleen. He is twice winner of the Smarties Book Prize (for Farmer Duck and Can't you sleep little bear?), he has also won the Kurt Maschler Award (The park in the dark) and the Best book for babies award (Rosie's babies).

~~~~ Penny Dale ~~~~
Penny Dale has illustrated many books for Walker as well as illustrating her own stories (these include Bet you can't!, The elephant tree and Wake up Mr B!). For this book she asked her friends and neighbours to model for the illustrations and then imagined what each person will look like as they age.
~ Night night, cuddly bear
~ Rosie's babies
~ When the teddy bears came
~~~~ The cover ~~~~

'Once there were giants' is written in large letters down the front of this book with the author and illustrators names underneath. There is also a picture of a woman with brown hair in a ribbon wearing a long skirt and blue cardigan holding a baby.

~~~~ The story ~~~~
This book is writen as if it is being written by the girl on the front cover. The book begins 'Once there were giants in our house. There were Mum and Dad and Jill and John and Uncle Tom. The small one on the rug is me.'
There is a picture with a man changing a babies nappy on the rug. There is also another mn, a woman, a girl and a boy in the picture.
On the next page the baby is big enough to go in a highchair 'way up in the sky'.
As you go through the story you see the baby getting older and doing the normal things that people do as they grow. The baby starts to crawl,takes walks to the park, talks, runs, starts playgroup,goes to school, fights with her brother, goes to big school,starts work, and gets married.
Jill, John, Uncle Tom, Mum and Dad appear all the way through the story.
At the end of the story the girl and her husband have a baby which means there are giants in the house again. One of the giants is the girl.
The last picture in the book has all the people in it that the first picture had but everyone has aged and grown up but there is a new baby on the rug.
~~~~ What I think ~~~~

I think this is a really nice book. The pictures are nice and easy to follow, showing children how you age from being a baby and the story is really easy to read.

I think this book is good because it shows children how you start off as a baby and eventually grow into an adult, and though you have different things to do throughout your life that may be scary they will be ok and there will be certain people that will normally always be there while you are growing up.

I would recommend this book as it simply teaches your child the different stages from baby to adult. It is a nice story to read with nice pictures.
