"The Big Sell On OneTel..."

OneTel is a great company that gives you very good rates on national and international calls made from the UK and also the option of an Internet connection that costs no more then one penny per minute at ALL times. This is very good value for those that want to surf at odd times during the day but don’t want to have to pay through the nose for an unlimited use package with another ISP.

If you sign up for the cheap national/international calls service via the website at, you can claim a £2 calling credit as a new customer bonus. Registration is very straightforward and once completed, you will be emailed confirmation including lots of welcome information and a Home or Away Calling Card. The card enables you to make calls from any phone in the world and enjoy the same discounts as you would from home. OneTel also promise to make the service available to you within 24 hours of registering. You can also register over the telephone if you prefer by leaving your details at the site which will prompt a customer service rep to call you back to set up your account, but you’ll miss out on the £2 calling credit if you register this way. Your welcome pack is then forwarded to you by post.

To take advantage of the reduced cost of calls, all you need to do is dial a four digit number (as advised by OneTel) in front of the main telephone number and this routes your calls through their system bypassing your own main telephony provider. Or you can order a free ‘Phone Pal’ which is an adapter you plug into your telephone socket which routes all calls through OneTel automatically. If you want a call not to be routed using the adapter, you don’t have to worry about unplugging it, you just dial a three digit prefix and the call will be made via your usual provider. The best bit, you don’t need to switch telephone service providers, or change your number, or pay any set up fees or monthly charges. OneTel just send you a monthly bill which shows the cost of your calls made using the service for that month. Or you can opt for online billing and view your bills using Adobe Acrobat Reader (which can be downloaded from the site if you dont have it already.

So what about the call rates themselves with OneTel? Well the international rates are very reasonable, with calls to the USA costing just 3p per min, New Zealand 6p per min and Australia 5p per min for example. These call charges apply whatever time of day you call, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! Calls made within the UK are charged at different rates for local and national calls. Local calls cost 1p per minute after 6pm and at weekends and 2.5p per min at all other times. National calls are charged at 2.5p per min at all times. Call rates for all countries can be checked at the website. Each call rate is fully inclusive of VAT making the service even better value, unlike BT who give their rates before VAT is added.

OneTel also allows you to make savings when calling mobile numbers, starting from 8p per min and rising to 20p per min depending on time of day called and the network you are calling.

The web site is excellent and answers any questions you may have as well as providing a virtual customer service centre where you can view your account and current and previous bills. You can also pay your bill here using a credit card, set up a direct debit for your bills or check out the bill analyzer where you can sort your bills by duration, cost, number called etc.

OneTel’s Internet service is also very straightforward to set up. You register online and can be off and running within just a few minutes. There are a limited number of packages you can choose from, the most popular being the 1p per min service. There are no additional charges at all for the service, just a fixed fee of 1p per minute whilst you are online and this is added to your normal monthly OneTel bill.

You get up to 3-email addresses ( and 10MB of webspace included. Emails can be checked on site if you wish, making it easy for those who are constantly on the move and not always able to use the same computer. Connection speed is usually pretty good although the service can get busy from time to time and I’ve never had any problems with reliability the times I’ve used it. Technical support is available 24 hours a day. However, you HAVE to be registered as a OneTel customer to take advantage of this service.

All in all, OneTel offer a great service, particularly with their long distance international call rates and the fact that you can pick and choose when to use them is a big bonus. Other companies are now springing up offering competitive rates but for now, I’m happy to stick with OneTel.

I have been using one Tel for a year now, few months back they changed their number and since then the quality of voice is not that good( for international calls)but still not bad and very economical.I wonder if any body else is having the same problem.
