One Hit Wonderland - Tony Hawks

... Drawing on Hawks’ first loves of music and comedy, he had for fifteen years been little but a “One Hit Wonder” – an artist who has one hit record and is never heard from again. Tony Hawks, however, isn’t happy with being a “One Hit Wonder”, as he feels he has the talent, if not as a singer, ... Read review

A Sense of Wonder

Advantages: Easy to read
Disadvantages: More predictable humour than his other books

...– an artist who has one hit record and is never heard from again. Tony Hawks, however, isn’t happy with being a “One Hit Wonder”, as he feels he has the talent, if not as a singer, then as a songwriter, to hit the charts again. So he takes on another bet – to have a hit record, either as a writer or a performer, within 2 years.

As with his previous books, we follow Tony as he aims to win his bet. This takes him to the heart of country ...
...or the £5.59 Amazon price. If you’re new to the amusing travelogue style of writing or to Tony Hawks, I’d recommend “Round Ireland With a Fridge” over “one Hit Wonderland”, but advise you to come back to this one once you’ve decided if the genre is to your taste.  ... more

Tony in Wonderland

Advantages: Consistently funny, superbly told
Disadvantages: Less charming than his previous books, a little fragmented

...football team at tennis), this one is almost verging on the normal. Although everything's relative, clearly - most sane people wouldn't take off around the world for two years with a mission to get themselves a hit record, all for the sake of "honour". But then, as it quickly becomes clear in One Hit Wonderland, Tony Hawks isn't at all representative of most sane people. "' I bet that you can't have a Top Twenty hit - anywhere in the world, either ...
...though, it is clear why one would want to do this; although Hawks is not after fame or money as a musician, plenty of others are, and the lack of innocence or "for-the-sake-of-it" good will adversely affects One Hit Wonderland. The second failing, somewhat related, was the lack of a consistent direction in the book ~ several times, Hawks would come up with an idea, pursue it, watch it fail, then sit back and think "what next?". In Round Ireland ...

One Hit Wonderland

Advantages: Funny and touching in equal measure
Disadvantages: The last page came too soon

...suggested that Tony is a One Hit Wonder. That he will never have a hit again. Ever. Really? Well we’ll see about that… Over the next two years Tony battles against all the odds to have a hit, somewhere – anywhere – in the world. He changes acts and styles with a bewildering lack of integrity. He travels to Nashville, song writing capital of the universe; to Amsterdam for that elusive Euro anthem; to Eastern Europe to duet with a Romanian beauty ...
...Amidst all the uncertainty only one thing is clear – in One Hit Wonderland anything is possible… ISBN 0 09 188208 7 Pages: - 308 Price: - £10.99 Websites: - www.onehitwonderland.com www.tony-hawks.com I personally believe that Tony Hawks should stay away from Parties and pubs as these are the places he usually ends up being cajoled into taking up challenges put to him in a half drunken state. Indeed he says himself that he is worried that he ...

...single. He already has had one - Top Five infact! Back in the eighties, under the guise of Morris Minor and the Majors, Hawks reached number 4 in the British charts with the "Stutter Rap". In the intervening years, Hawks has made his name as a stand-up comedian, appearing on radio quiz shows and appearing asa contestant on TV's "Whose Line is it Anyway?" Years later, whilst at a dinner party, the subject of Tony's brief pop career arises and in ...
...by hundreds of fans including one lady who is determined to have Norman pose for a photograph with her daughter - even if she has to stop the traffic to do it. Hawks gets you so involved that you outwardly groan each time there is a setback beyond Tony's control. In all of his books, he has shown a knack for drawing in the reader and making you back him all the way. I wouldn't normally write such a short review of a book but really all you need ...

Take a Chance On Me

Advantages: Warmth, humour and some great descriptions.
Disadvantages: Knowing that Adams is gone, and there'll not be more like this

the best book I have ever read about endangered wildlife. It?s essentially just a description of a journey, or rather several journeys, to foreign locations in an attempt to find endangered species. It?s almost just a natural history version of Tony Hawks ?One Hit Wonderland?, only better written. Think of a cross between David Attenborough and Michael Palin?s BBC documentaries, and you?re getting the right idea. It is the same thing that made Michael Palin?s travelogues so entertaining that makes ?Last Chance to See? as easy to read as it is. It?s written in a hugely accessible style, with very few technical terms ? you?ll not find a single Latin species name here ? and with an ever present humour. Douglas Adams has taken these voyages as an opportunity to poke fun at everything, including himself. There are moments that a lesser ...

Advantage Hawks

Advantages: Good writing, very funny
Disadvantages: Not many surprises as far as plot goes

and at night you could fall down a manhole because organised gangs steal the covers to sell to be melted down, but Tony never really criticises. He starts to feel genuinely for the country and the friends he makes there, including the family who over him a place to stay while he is in Moldova. This is, essentially, a comic account of how Tony tries to win the bet. It's not great literature but it's well-written and Hawks is a master of comedy understatement. His razor-sharp wit and sarcasm are what make this book. That the location is primarliy Moldova is secondary although it does give an added dimension. Hawks writes in a relaxed, easy -to-read style and you can whizz through this light-hearted nonsense pretty quickly. If you have enjoyed other Tony Hawks books (Round Ireland with a Fridge, One Hit Wonderland) or you enjoy non ...
