If you are already familiar with Richard Layman there’s no need to tell you that his work is
brimming with blood, gore and graphically violent sexual themes and One Rainy Night is
no exception.
A huge fan of Laymon novels I personally own over 30 titles and this is defiantly one of
my favourites,in fact I've read my copy so many times the pages are starting to fall out.
From chapter one you are drawn into a story about a peculiar black rain that turns all who
are coated in it into bloodlust filled crazies.
Because of the large character base of the book it is slightly lacking in the depth of
character you come to expect from Laymon but you still feel involved enough to root for
the good guys.
On the whole though a good read and one of the few Laymons where by the end you
actually understand what happened instead of a collection of random acts of
violence(though having said that One Rainy Night does have an exceptionally high body
count).
I would recommend this or any other Laymon in a heartbeat.

It has been bought to my attention that I neglected the plot line.My apologies.

It all begins when the body of Maxwell Chidi is found tied to a goal post on a football field
burnt to death.Later that evening Officer Hanson goes out to check over the scene and
appease his conscience when a strange viscous black rain begins to fall coating all outside
filling them with an uncontrollable bloodlust.

Meanwhile John and his wife Lynn are heading out to dinner at the Edged leaving their
nine year old daughter Kara at home with Denise who was filling in for Lisa who couldn't
baby-sit because of an emergency.

Officer Trevor Hudson is looking forward to a night off he just has to pop into the station
to pick up a pizza voucher then it's off to O'Casey's to see the waitress Maureen and
hopefully ask her out when he is delayed by mother and daughter Francine and Lisa
Walters with information on the Chidi case.

Lou,Buddy,Doug,Sheila and Cyndi are sitting around at Buddy's place on Mercer having a
party when it suddenly occurs to them that Lisa(who was Buddy's girl but left him for
Maxwell Chidi) may need to be silenced......permanently and they’re sure she was going to
be baby-sitting tonight.

Maureen O'Casey wished she didn't have to do the deliveries tonight but her brother Rory
was sick so it couldn't be helped. She just had three family pizzas to deliver to a house on
Mercer and she could go back to the dinner and hopefully Trevor would be in tonight.

These are the main characters of the story and this is what they're doing when the rain
hits.To find out more and how their tales twist in together to a great climax you'll just
have to read and find out.

I've not read anything by Laymond. It sounds like something I'd read so I'll have to look out for his books!
