Advantages: Very simple to use. Large display. Discreet. Disadvantages: None of any consequence.
recommended a ?OneTouchUltra? as my first testing kit by my specialist, I have since used a variety of products in the Johnson & Johnson Lifescan ?OneTouch? range, culminating in the ?OneTouchUltra Easy? (?OTE? for ease of reference) which is now my primary blood test kit. The OTE is available in a variety of funky colours (pink, lime and black), but I have settled for a functional silver version.
HOW IT WORKS
The OTE is a very discreet size and measures around two and half inches long by one inch wide, and is around half an inch at its thickest. It has a simple monochrome LCD screen that shows the reading in nice large numbers and only one soft oval rubber button with an up arrow on one side and a down arrow on the other. The unit can be turned on and off in two ways. Firstly, by pressing the rubber button and holding it down ...
Advantages: Only takes 5 seconds to produce results, can take blood sample from forearm as well as fingertips Disadvantages: Still have to take blood samples!
bloodglucose meters a number of years ago, the total time that testing takes has reduced dramatically, from over a minute (hardly any quicker than measuring by eye) to just 5 seconds in this latest product. My previous meter, the Lifescan PocketScan, took 15 seconds and it always seemed like simply *ages* when I was waiting to get on with something else - injecting, excercising, driving, you name it.
With the OneTouchUltra, the time difference is really noticeable, even though it's only 10 seconds less than previously. By the time I've put away the finger pricker and pack of test strips the result of the test is being displayed, I can remove the used test strip and get on with whatever I was doing.

and place it into the machine with the coloured pad facing upwards, there is only one place to put the strip and you need to push it in as far as it will go, the machine will then turn on automatically and will display a code, you should check this matches the code on the vial of strips.
You then need to hold the pricked against where you are taking blood from, I use my fingers make sure you use a different finger every time, you can use your earlobe as well. You then need to apply the blood to the strip; you can remove the strip to do this or leave it in and just stick your finger on the pad. When enough blood has been applied it will beep, then a time glass will appear. After 5 seconds your result will appear. Older machines could take up to 2 minutes to give readings, this is a nightmare in an emergency as if someone is going hypo you ...
