HALIFAX - SHARE DEALING FOR NOVICES
Advantages: An easy share dealing system to use Disadvantages: none- fairly competitive with rest of market
Halifax Share dealing is quite a good way for any novice to experiment with the stock exchange. I am writing this from a novice perspective for an absolute novice who wants to get started. There are two types of account, either you can go for a normal share dealing account suited for investors and speculators who want to be able to buy and sell shares on the same day, ie to make a profit in the afternoon from shares that have gone up in price since ... ...case that commission charges with Halifax or any other share dealing service will wipe out most of your profits, unless you are fortunate to be tipped off about a penny share that dramatically jumps up in value (but such finds are rare unless you are very experienced, and there are many internet rumors to encourage penny share investors to part with their money quickly).
If you are interested in building up a portfolio of penny shares on a budget ...

Poor customer service serious Tech. Issues with Barc StockBrokers
Advantages: Good service as long as you dont have any complaints Disadvantages: loads of technical problems, never reply emails
...will sell my holding. Unfortunately Barclays system was reporting wrong percentages and was showing me in profit too early where as my holding was still in loss (I never realise that problem) un till one day when system was showing that My Barclays holding is (+17,579.60%) up and my purchase value is some kind of random value, I ring up Barclays stockbrokers to ask them what’s going on in my portfolio, the customer service agent told me we don’t ... ...not convinced that company like Barclays can say that we don’t know your purchase value where as they are managing all my money, I send them email asking them about problem and fix. I received a reply after about 48 hours that problem occurred because my trade frequency is too high, in that case if system lost track it will only download updated values overnight, and now my portfolio has be update with overnight calculation I was happy with response. ...

It may be cheap but you will pay the price
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Too many to list
Do not be taken in by the "cheaper" charges. The site has been down for over 10 days with interim sporadic access. On the off chance your telephone call gets answered suggestions such as "switch your computer off and reboot", indeed "switch your router off and reboot" are mentioned.
HL's failure has cost me money trading within my SIPP and Private fund. Hence I am switching everything away from them.
Generally the service is poor - emails are not ...

The Share Centre
Advantages: Great for beginners Disadvantages: Some online technology pitfalls
Having contacted The Share Centre after seeing their advertisement in the Daily Express. You will find a number of benefits from this service. On enquiry, you will find that their sharedealing promotional leaflets are well written, clear and very concise.
Share Centre says it offers one of the easiest and cheapest ways to buy and sell shares. If you are, as they say, "a dabbler" or a "dab hand" their intial information will inform you and make you ... ...no initial set-up fee was the winner for me. In fact, online you are able to "practice" without spending anymoney. This means you can learn how to use the system or try out new techniques or trading systems without having to spend a penny.
Their leaflets Trading, Investing, Shares and their application form are easy to read and are a great resource, even if you use them to learn about sharedealing, without having to use their service.
You can buy ...

Gone Downhill...
Advantages: None any more Disadvantages: Don't reply to emails
I was a customer of Selftrade for many years. As an execution only service I thought they were great with no management fees and just a flat fee per trade.
All that changed in December 2003 when they decided to impose a quarterly management fee on "inactive" accounts. I don't necessarily have a problem with the fee, but I do object to the fact that it was imposed without being notified. They claim to have informed me of the change via email, but ... ...me and tell me that they were taking money from my account to cover the fees, but not to inform me of the change in the first place.
I have now closed my account and am trying to reclaim the inactivity fees but they DO NOT reply to my emails.
In addition other online brokers offer a better service with NO management fees, and for less per trade. ...
