What is channelling? (and other definitions)
To over simplify matters, channelling is a means of gaining access to higher levels of consciousness that are available via your higher self, spirit guides or other energetic (as opposed to physical beings). Oh, I’ve introduced more terms that need to be defined.
Your higher or source self is the spiritual entity (but still a part of you) that holds all of your memories, lessons and experiences from previous lives and incarnations. This higher self is the keeper of your hard-won wisdom and the coordinator of the current phase of your development. Spirit guides (or just guides) are, again simply, beings that you have chosen to help you through your life lessons. They’re more than happy to point you in the right direction while giving you advice, assistance and support.
‘Other energetic beings’ is not the best catch-all phrase for the fantastic and interesting entities that you can also interact with. Feel like having a talk with the energy of the planet (male or female depending on which aspect you call in)? Like to have an Archangel walk home with you on dark and lonely nights (they’re so big and strong and, well, blue)? Just a couple of the energies that you can connect with when you channel.
Fortunately, Opening to channel discusses channelling, higher selves and guides etc in greater detail and more elegantly that I can manage in a short review.
How does the book work? What do I have to do?
For some people, just reading the book will be enough to open them up to channelling. In particular, the sections that were written by the author’s guides (Orin and DaBen) have been attuned or energised to resonate with the aura or vibrational fields of those who have already worked on spiritual matters before or have a natural predisposition to esoteric skills.
Everyone else (self included) can get the most out of Opening to channel by working through each of the sections and having at least one serious attempt at each of the activities. The first section covers ‘what is channelling’ and talks the reader through all the concepts and getting ready to channel. The second section is the step-by-step channelling program that goes through various relaxation techniques and provides tips on interpreting messages and giving readings for others. The third section contains the author’s first experiences with channelling and stories of outcomes from their channelling workshops. The last section is full of advice on developing your channelling talent and living life as a channel. This final section is a bit over the top but you get a good feel for how serious the author’s are about channelling.
Will I hear voices?
Maybe, but that doesn’t mean you’re going mad. The only part of Opening to channel that I’m not that keen on relates to the authors’ assumption that channelling works the same way for almost everyone. Through their workshops they will have come across a wide variety of people with a range of channelling abilities however most of these individuals would have been pretty aware (metaphysically speaking) to begin with. As such, the emphasis of Opening to Channel is on trance channelling where you go into a particular state of awareness which allows your spirit guide, for example, to speak through you. This type of channelling is the source of much humour (and sometimes suspense) in movies where the eccentric old lady suddenly sweeps the Ouija Board off the table and starts talking in a voice entirely dissimilar to her own about strange goings-on.
Some people might be disappointed to learn that about 95 per cent of channelling experiences are much less dramatic. For those of us who are endowed with more modest intuitive abilities, Opening to channel will help you to make the best of what you’ve got. It will improve, for example, your clairvoyance (psychic sight or prediction), clairaudience (psychic hearing), clairsentience (psychic knowledge) by clearing the way to energy sources and opportunities but you have to allow it to do so. Only a small fraction of the population is cut out for true trance channelling in much the same way that not all of us have the potential to be Olympic athletes.
Don’t be discouraged if, after doing the activities and practicing faithfully, nothing seems to be happening. You will find that the accuracy of your ‘gut feelings’ and hunches will improve almost immediately but you have to make sure that you’re not dismissive of the information you’re receiving. (Once, I was sent so many specifics– about a dog, no less – that I thought I had to be making it up, even after channelling for many years, and decided not to tell anyone. Thankfully I came to my senses and, armed with the exact date, place, description of what the dog looked like and his name, went and picked him up. Every detail was correct).
The bottom line
Opening to channel is not designed to convince those who don’t believe in channelling or spirit guides. It contains a wealth of information and tools to help people who are interested in developing their psychic abilities to their fullest potential. No, you won’t be able to predict lottery numbers or read peoples' minds but why would you want to? I’m sure you’re more interested in spiritual growth than personal gain.
