I have just come back from Optical Express with a brand new pair of specs. Not only is this a new pair, but my first ever pair! At the age of 29 I thought it time I got an eye test. Optical Express were offering a free test if you buy your glasses there and then. As I intended to do this I thought I'd go along. If you don't purchase the test costs £15.00.
Now, the last time I had an eye test was at primary school where you have to read the letters from the triangular pyramid to determine how your eyesight is. It pleases me to say that although nowadays the principle is loosely similar it has been updates somewhat in the last 25 years! Now you encounter numerous pieces of machinery that test your vision as well as a digitised version of the board.
I phoned up yesterday evening to make an appointment and was given one the following day. The branch I went to was the one in Westfield shopping centre in west London. My appointment was at 3pm but they were running about 15 minutes late so had me waiting around a bit. Here is where my grumbling ends though as the test itself was efficiently handled and done so in a very warm and friendly manner. Every step was explained along the way both in terms of procedure and what they were checking for.
Once done I was shuffled over to the glasses selection which is extensive ranging from top designer brands to unbranded pairs. Again I can only comment on how helpful and personable both members of staff were to me - both on an optical and fashion conscious level. I was incredibly fussy both with style and some of the ludicrously inflated prices that I criticised constantly. They were nothing less than patient and courteous to me. I finally found my frame (the cheapest there at £60 and that was with a 50% discount) after a long consultation with everyone in the shop as to a) whether they suited me and b) whether they were sure this particular pair were not in fact intended for women and not men. On the latter I still have my doubts but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
Once frames were chosen they need to prepare the lenses. I was warned that this usually takes an hour but due to high demand it may take a little longer than that. I was promised a phone call as soon as they were ready so I could return and within 1 hour and 20 minutes the call duly arrived. I am pleased with my specs and with Optical Express. I have read some reviews here that express a less than positive view but my experience was entirely the opposite. Highly recommended.
