Don't buy an Olymous X-42 ---- picture quality is dreadful.

Advantages: Classic good looks -- nice controls
Disadvantages: Really poor picture quality

For anybody thinking of buying a digital camera for Christmas I would strongly advise against buying the Olympus X-42. We bought an X-42 to replace our 4 year old Samsung Digimax A6. The dinky little 12mp Olympus cost more than the 6mp Samsung did over 4 years ago but in comparison the picture quality is dreadful, the lens seems good (as one would expect from Olympus) but when you try and blow up & crop an image it appears grainy and lacks detail in fact my old 1.2mp mobile phone takes pictures that are as almost good, I suspect the image sensor is just not up to the job. The other fault is it takes an age to process a picture before the next one can be taken. A real shame because it is a charming little camera and having enjoyed owning several Olympus cameras in the past I was expecting good things from it. I am now trying to get ...

Review of Olympus X-42

Olympus 8X25 WP I

Advantages: Image adjustments to give great view, waterproof, adjustable eye-relief
Disadvantages: fixed magnification, average build and design quality

use a high-density Bak-4 prism, which accounts for the lens and prism quality. Olympus have taken great care in the mechanical and alignment quality of these binoculars, although its design quality is not very good. The high-density Bak-4 prism as well as the good mechanical and alignment quality of these very binoculars means that it produces bright, high contrast and fairly sharp images. The very good mechanical and alignment quality means that very light components have been put together with precision to produce an overall light piece of kit. The Olympus 8X25 WPI would be a great inclusion for camping trips to areas where there is a lot of water and may involve a lot of water based activities. The reason for it being waterproof is the utilization of a particular type of prism. The prism that is used is known as a roof prism. This ...

Review of Olympus 8X25 WP I

A poor offering from Olympus

Advantages: Takes AAA batteries and....er.....er...hmmmm.... takes AAA batteries
Disadvantages: Awful screen, not user friendly, feels cheap and nasty, made out of inferior materials etc. etc.

the quality was good (or so I thought) so thought I was on to a winner. Olympus X-42 The Olympus X-42 digital camera is your typical point and shoot camera designed for the casual photographer. With the box stating ?12 mega pixels, 5x optical zoom, 2.7? LCD monitor, intelligent auto, digital image stabilisation, AF tracking, face detection and perfect shot preview? the specifications are very impressive, especially when you consider the price, all adding up to what I thought would be great value for money. In the box is the X-42 itself, an XD ? micro SD card adaptor, all necessary cables to link it up to a computer, a disc containing Olympus Master Software, a quick start guide and a further disc containing the user manual. The only thing it didn?t contain was some batteries, which surprised me somewhat. Most digital cameras ...
