Advantages: Some funny moments, its entertaining, range of actors used (both English & American) Disadvantages: Slightly slow in parts, a bit cheesy/predictable
forward quite alot, through days and days (obviously I don't expect one movie to really show everything that goes on through all 80 days or it would be an extremely long movie but still!) at a time, where they show a glimpse of some of the areas they pass through (such as the Himalayas) and then shoot past it again, im sure whole continents were ignored and thats a shame. Going by memory, It seemed to me like the movie went from them being in China and then suddenly Fogg was in San Fransisco, thats quite a leap!
One thing I liked in this film were the cameos and the actors involved. There are at least a couple of English actors with the lead role obviously played by Coogan, also Jim Broadbent stars as the somewhat corrupt Lord Kelvin, Ian McNeice as Colonel Kitchener and Kathy Bates as Queen Victoria (though she doesn't have much screen ...
Advantages: Good stunts Disadvantages: The rest of the film
.
The film contains many special appearances. Richard Branson plays a man running a balloon stall - a pointless gag about how you'd be "mad" to try and travel by balloon ensues. Other stars include (from a long list) Sammo Hung of Martial Law fame, Owen Wilson and John Cleese. Arnold Schwarzenegger gives an awful rendition of a Turkish prince, Mark Addy plays a funny but bizarre sea captain and Kathy Bates makes a decent Queen Victoria for the short time she's on screen.
Cecille de France is good as Martinique and Jim Broadbent is a scary Lord Kelvin but Ewen Bremner is surprisingly awful as a corrupt police officer. I disliked every part of his performance.
There are a few chuckles to be had in "Around The World in80 days" particularly when Fogg's invention plans for flying and electricity are scoffed at. Sadly though, a lot ...
Advantages: Jackie Chan fight sequences, silly fun Disadvantages: REALLY silly, a plot you could fish with, and a travesty to literature
"We have reached a golden age - anything that can be invented, has been."
Perhaps it's because such a statement is so easy to believe of our own time that there remains such appeal in the science of Victorian London, when man flying in the air was nothing but a flight of fancy, and electricity was a novelty, let alone the myriad contraptions we now take for granted (and which are useless as soon as there's a power cut). Yes, it's fun to look back to a day when circumnavigating the globe in three months would be a feat almost beyond fancy!
Jules Verne's classic tale of inventor Phileas Fogg and his wager (not a 'bet', you see - he's a gentleman) to travel around the world in eighty days has made several appearances on screen. Does anyone else remember the cartoon version where Phileas was a lion? Ahem. Last seen on the big screen ...
