The reason to why I went for this phone was due to me getting a phone on my partners account, one bill instead of two made sense. I wanted a phone with a camera, and Orange suggested I went for the SPV 100 and it would be free, now that was a good offer to me, so we took it.
**WHAT YOU GET**
1) A charger with different adapter's for use without the cradle and to use in other countries like the 2 pin plug. 2) A Desktop cradle for use with PC for updates 3) Sound Cards which is only 8 MB which doesn't do much, you will need to upgrade it. 4) A CD which has Active Sync software. 5) A Leather case quite thick so if you do drop your phone it won't get hurt. 6) A Camera which you plug into the bottom of the phone like you would do with the charger. 7) A Hands free, which can be used for headphones to use with the media player. 8) And not forgetting the Manual, 2 booklets.
**FEATURES** Digital Camera - This is not built in, I found that the picture quality of pictures taken using the camera are not very good I found they came out very dark, so unable to see a clear picture. Wap GPRS Diary Clock / Alarm / Date - Very easy to use, I found the ring tones wasn't load so made the alarm pretty useless to me. Photo Messaging Picture messaging Advanced Colour Gaming - yeh right Large colour screen E-mail Call divert Call waiting & call hold Speed dialling Answer Fax Calculator Last numbers redial Phone book memory - The Phone book is great you can store names, numbers, address, web address, e-mails and more. Text SMS - This wasn't too bad, but there is no Delete all text option, so you need to delete one by one. Text messaging Games - You get free games including solitaire, Rebound and Tennis. Multi Media - The media player isn't too bad a bit on the slow side. Infrared connection Instant messenger
**MY OPINION**
I found that on the SPV, the menu system is pretty easy to follow. The phone can take a few seconds when you stroll down the menus. I think the SPV has many features and had the potential to be a good phone, but I feel that it is a big let down by the battery, I was charging it every night, even if it was used only a few times that day.
You can use speed dial, but instead of just getting that number you want you get a few, I have my partner under number 3 who's name is Jase, press 3 the first number is Jase then you seem to get the names beginning with D, haven't a clue why. If you press and hold 3 it will go to Jase, just giving you an example.
A bit of a heavy phone but still look's cool, the first time my 4 year old got to it the screen cracked, so I would say I don't feel the phone last's long, breaks and marks very easy, be warned don't drop it or let the kids get there hands on it. The keypad is small so watch out when typing a text you can easy press the wrong key. Also has a speaker phone but never worked or I was doing it wrong.
I felt the camera was a let down not being built in, so I found my self keeping it in my bag just encase I wanted to snap. But I also had the worry of it getting damaged I'm so glad I never dropped that.
The phone would have been more likeable if the camera was built in, save's carrying it around. Also the voicemail symbol stays there even after you delete your answer phone messages. I never used the internet or e-mail so not sure how good, bad, fast or slow it was. I found the reception wasn't very good. I did find that you need to reboot the phone by taking the battery out to restart the phone now and then I did it about once per week.
You really do need to have access to a PC so you can the Orange Updates. You get other ring tones when available, and different home screens.
The only good point I would say about this phone is the size of screen and the fact it has an appointments section. The ring tones are very plain, and not very good one's, not great quality either and not that load, abit of a pain when using the alarm, but you can use different ring tones to have as the alarm.
**PROBLEMS**
I have sent back 6 of these phones each having a software problem. The first one worked fine for a few weeks, but then started to play up with the screen going grey and being far too slow.
Each time I had to phone orange to say this one has a software problem, they sent another one out. Every other day they would come and collect the faulty phone. But if you send back 2 phones with the same problem they have to send you the updated version it's in there terms & conditions.
After the 2nd I was getting angry. I even told them I would go else where. They gave me the SPV E100, after the 6th phone. The last 2 phones I had, had problems with the profiles section where it was stuck, could not adjust it nor could I use the hands free on it. If the software wasn't a problem I think I would have said it's a good phone. I don't know any one else with one of these so could never compare.
**OTHER INFORMATION** Battery life: Talk time - 2.5 hours standby time - 3.0 days
Weight: 120g
Size: Height - 116 mm Width - 48 mm Depth - 22 mm

I don't recommend this phone.
**Update** This phone is now no longer, it has been updated to an SPV E100 and also an SPV E200. I have spoken to a friend to has had the E100 then upgraded to the E200 and has still found that they are very slow, the design never changed and are still as bad, picture's are still not good. But the E100 and E200 both come with built in camera's
**Update** Now it seems that the E100 is no longer.
The SPV range is now: SPV E200 - Only available on pay monthly with the phone being free. SPV C500 - Only available on pay monthly with the phone being free. SPV M1000 - £249.99 on pay monthly. Thanks for reading Jayne x
Advantages: Excellent Introduction to PDA's - if you've not had one before. Disadvantages: Poor battery Life
I've just upgraded to the SPV M600 - it's the first non Nokia phone I've had and it was something of a struggle to get my head around all of the features and to get used to the somewhat different way of doing things. I won't try to list all of the features- if you've had plenty of features on your phone before, suffice to say it's got most of them, although I was disconcerted at first to find no radio, stopwatch, countdown timer etc, which I had found ... ...where the different way of doing things comes in - many features are available for purchase as extra programmes to be run via the pocket PC software, which forms the basic operating system for the PDA function of the phone. Alternatively, you can download and install Java Midlets - if you can find one that works.... To be fair, this model is fairly new and plenty of suitable downloads will no doubt be available in due course.
At the moment I'm still ...

...buy a nice shiny new Orange SPV.
I purchased it the day before they were supposedly released, it cost me £99.99 on an Orange Contract with a monthly bill of £25. I’ve seen prices of £170 quoted dependant on tariff.
Just out of interest I also opted for the SPV special add on of unlimited GPRS, which is valuable if you want to surf the web on your phone....

Battery Times are quoted as 3 days standby and 2.5 hours talking but I’d say that this is seriously wrong as I never get near that!

Original Review:
I upgraded to an SPV from a Nokia 8310 (see previous review). What attracted me to it was that it has many of the features of a PDA on a device the size of a phone. Okay so the SPV is larger than your average phone these days, but it is still a lot smaller than say a Nokia Communicator or the new Sony Ericcson ... ...upgrade (and new contract) in Orange shops. I got mine at the one in Victoria station in London - great people - very helpful. To see the full spec’s I’d suggest looking at the Orange web site (unfortunately I don’t think I’m allowed to provide a link) so for those not wishing to go there I’ve copied and pasted key features at the end of the review. The key things for me where:
- Supports Active Sync. I am used to Pocket PC anyway and know that ...

Advantages: Loads of functionality, great when you are out and about Disadvantages: Very short battery life, annoying little bugs
When I first saw the Orange SPV (which stands for Sound, Pictures, Video trivia-buffs), the first commercial GPRS phone to use the Microsoft 'Smartphone' 2002 OS, I was really excited about it. It looked like it had everything; you could carry around the contents of your MS Outlook as it duplicated all of your data directly from your computer, it could send and receive email, Web browse, run Instant Messenger and it connected via GPRS - all on a ... ...15” computer monitor.
However, Orange have a list of sites specially designed for the SPV which cover most things you want to look up when you are out and about. As with e-mails, it's fine for occasional use when out but I wouldn't use the SPV as your primary internet connection.
Camera quality
I didn’t have high expectation for the quality of the pictures that the SPV would take. I saw it being used for photos on trips but the detail is not nearly ...

...supplied locked not only to Orange as a network provider, but also locked to prevent any non-approved software being installed. There are a few apps out there for sale, but the list isn't exactly vast. There are also some third party add ons but again, not that many of them. In order to install these it was necessary to hack around and unlock the phone yourself. Eventually Orange relented to some degree and let people do this in a more official way, ... ...unlocking their phones were doing it in order to test software they had written. I'm rather dubious as to how many of those unlocking it ever did anything of the sort. Among the software available there are Spectrum and Gameboy emulators but the keys required to use the game ROMs these require were too unfriendly for my tastes and although I downloaded things for novelty value I never used them.
Overall I think that my expectations were not met ...

Advantages: Digital camera/Video Camera, Windows Smartphone 2003 operating system, Bluetooth Disadvantages: Very poor battery life, have to buy SD/MMC card
I bought my SPV E200 at the start of February 2004 from the Orange Website for £50 (My contract is a basic £25 a month) but is now free with the same contract just over a month later.
LOOKS
The phone itself is qwuite large and bulky but the way I see it, is that it is packed with features. It weighs in at 120g but to its credit has a fantastic 16-bit TFT showing 65,536 colours. This is by far the best screen that I have seen on a phone (better than the Nokia 6600 - which I also have)
Operating System
The phone runs on the Windows Smartphone 2003 operating System, which boasts some fantastic features. Being used to the simplicity of the Nokia 6610 and 6600, this was much more complicated to use. However, being able to run Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger is a fantastic bonus. Also among its array of stunts is playing MP3s ...

Got this on contract with Orange. Mostly, it has been a good phone, offering all the smartphone capabilities I need - wi-fi, Skype, Word, PDF etc BUT
(-) I am now on my second handset as after 8 months or so, the first one started to freeze up continuously and I couldn't make or answer phone calls, or do anything with it as all I could see was a white screen. This wasn't always solved by rebooting so it went back. The second one occasionally exhibits the same malfunction as well as being very slow to move from one application to another. I thought it might be a firmware problem as I got the phone when it was very new on the market, but with it happening with the second handset too, I'm not so sure it has been resolved. Another minus is that it seems very difficult to change the default settings for bluetoothed files eg they go ...
