I've just upgraded to the SPV M600 - it's the first non Nokia phone I've had and it was something of a struggle to get my head around all of the features and to get used to the somewhat different way of doing things. I won't try to list all of the features- if you've had plenty of features on your phone before, suffice to say it's got most of them, although I was disconcerted at first to find no radio, stopwatch, countdown timer etc, which I had found very useful on my old phone. However, this is where the different way of doing things comes in - many features are available for purchase as extra programmes to be run via the pocket PC software, which forms the basic operating system for the PDA function of the phone. Alternatively, you can download and install Java Midlets - if you can find one that works.... To be fair, this model is fairly new and plenty of suitable downloads will no doubt be available in due course.

At the moment I'm still going through the initial struggles with the phone and the adjustment in expectations that comes when you initally think its going to do everything. It probably does do just about everything, but you need to spend time on reading the handbook, finding the right downloads etc. Setting up the active synch and bluetooth was a nightmare, but Ive had this on previous phones, so nothing new here...

As examples of my own experience in this respect, I had hoped to use Access database on the phone. For some reason which I'm not up to date with, the latest versions of WIndows Mobile 5 (the operating software for the phone, do not support Access from 2003 onwards, so if you look for suitable databases on the Handango website, where most appropriate downloads seem to be available, beware of programs that say they support Access; - they may not. Download the trials first and try them out. The most useful one I've found so far is Visual CE, but again, plenty of learning is needed to get your head around it.

A second experience has been the discovery of the device as an MP3 player synching with Windows Media Player 10. OK, even my old Nokia had the MP3 capability, but having been born and brought up in the age of Vinyl, this is the first time I can see a real, convenient , use for the MP3 thing - I'm talking here about in car entertainment. No more finding the cassette tape or CD - just hook up the phone to one of those CD converter kits and play back from the MP3. (You have got round to recording your old record collection on computer haven't you?) You may need an adapter though. I got one from Maplins for £1.50. They did say in the shop, that it wouldn't work, but it works perfectly.

Even better is the useful character recognition software - very useful if you want to get away from all those scribbled notes and reminders - just scribble them on the phone instead and it will, with luck, recognise your handwriting and convert it into text to synch with your outlook notes via the active sync utility.

Well, here we are and I havent even said anything about the phone yet - in fact there's so much to say that it can't all be said here, so I'll restrict myself to the above experiences and a few further comments about the phone. At the moment, the phone is the downside for me. The speaker isn't brilliant and I've already rung several people up by accident, whilst trying to get used to it. They said in the shop that my existing Nokia handsfree set would work on it, but mine. at least, doesn't, very well. To avoid a road accident, I keep to the tried and trusted old phone, diverting calls to it before setting out, if I'm really expecting a call on the move. The SPV is probably not a good idea for handsfree stuff, you could probably be more easily distracted whilst trying to navigate it, with disastrous results.
If you've got to drive with it, get a good headset and train the voice dialling functions to be on the safe side.
On the other hand the contacts list is easier to manage, using the provided 'pen' and touchscreen and this is what really makes the difference between this and the old phones. Sending a text becomes closer in method to sending an E mail and indeed, you will discover that the messaging function is closer in fucntion and appearance to the Microsoft Outlook box, than to the older texting functions. Its handy having the pen, as I had just got used on my old phone to sending text messages from the desktop via bluetooth - it seem you can't do it in the same way with non Nokia technology - you have to use Orange's utility which will cost you, even if you have free text message bundles.

These are just a few initial thoughts about the SPV M600 written off the top of my head, so my apologies if if its a bit disjointed, you'll probably be thinking a bit the same after you've had it for a couple of weeks! Its a great device, if perhaps a bit annoying at first and I'm looking forward to the next upgrade with who knows what features. Don't know about you though, I had to sign up for 18 months for this one.
