...Following on from my review yesterday on server Ultra SCSI hard disks, here im going to tell you about their younger, smaller and better brother. The Serial SCSI hot swap 146.8GbHard disks by HP.
As with all technology, everything seems to be in the constant evolution to downsize. Harddrive downsizing always struck me as a difficult one to tackle as people require more and more storage, hence bigger disk space. Somehow the Serial SCSI has mastered this by shrinking the form factor down from a width of 3.5 inches to 2.5. The Height of the device is also somewhat reduced.
A reduction in size means a reduction in moving parts size. This in turn leads to a great power saving which makes these drives more economical and environmentally friendly than their older but bigger brothers.
As mentioned we have a mixture of G4 and G5...

Advantages: Fastest hard drive there is! Disadvantages: Lack of storage.
...drive, and not only did it prove to be even faster than the once untouchable 36.7GB Raptor, the extra storage will also go a very long way for most users. Now, with two of these drives, you can effectively create around 148GB's of high performance storage, without straying into the likes of SCSI. Heck, with the amount of SATA connectors found on some motherboards these days, you could pack the system full of 74GB Western Digital Raptors and allow them to take care of all your storage needs; whether it be OS, file serving, gaming or anything else.
Simply put, this is THE harddrive to get for performance enthusiasts who still want ample storage space, just don't expect to pick it up for cheap. As it would appear, the WD360 is a little bit cheaper per GB in general, so if you have plenty of SATA connectors to spare and plan to fill them...
