Orlistat - brand name Xenical - is manufactured by the pharmaceutical comapny Roche.
It is a treatment for obesity -scientifically known as a pancreatic lipase inhibitor- and works by preventing the fat that is ingested in your diet from being absorbed into your body when it is in your stomach.
It is prescribed in conjuction with a mildly 'low calorie' diet in those above a certain body mass index (30kg/metre square) or greater.
The treatment is usually started only if diet alone has previuosly produced a weight loss of less than 2.5kg over a period of 4 consecutive weeks.
FORMULATION
Capsules,turquoise each containing 120mg of orlistat.
CAUTIONS
Diabetes, taking certain vitamins (known as fat-soluble) - that problem is usually avoided by taking any needed vitamin preparation at least 2 hours after taking xenical.
SIDE-EFFECTS
Liquid oily stools, faecal urgency, wind, less commonly-occuring abdominal/rectal pain which can be reduced by following a reduced-fat diet which in itself can help reduce weight, headache, tiredness, menstrual irregularity and anxiety.
DOSAGE
120mg (one capsule) taken immediately before, during, or upto 1 hour after each main meal (upto 360mg - 3 capsules- daily). The maximum period of treatment is 3 yrs. If you do miss a meal then don't take the corresponding dose.
Roche have set up a helpline dedicated in relation to xenical and info/advice on weight loss and you can usually obtain that info either by contacting Roche (see info in leaflet enclosed in box) or asking your pharmacist.
The feedback i've received is quite positive. Certainly the drug has been prescribed increasingly since it came on the market and i have seen many repeat scripts for individual patients over a period of a few months so, it must be working for them.
Do not expect to go to your G.P. and get a script just like that, you do need to fulfill the criteria outlined above and in all fairness the drug is not cheap (£41.16 for a pack of 84 caps last time i looked).
