War! What is it Good For? Reading!

Advantages: A fun, all-action read
Disadvantages: Slightly weak ending

I recently enjoyed Chris Bunch's "Last Legion" series, which told the story of training, combat and down time in an army marooned without help and seemingly without hope in deep space. Advantages: A very moving and entertaining new book that deserves a good read
Disadvantages: Military /science fiction which may not appeal to everybody who can get put off by the sci-fi label.

Another first book by a new author. Brief synopsis. It is the year 2040 and Earth has made contact with an Alien Species. The contact is in the form of impacts from space based kinetic energy weapons that have destroyed whole cities across the globe. The aliens are based on Ganymede, one of Jupiter's moons and to get there and fight, humanity has obsolete space craft and military weapons, some Vietnam era. Its either win or extinction. After many ...
...is hardly unexpected as the military costs a great deal of money to keep in proper shape. If there is no threat on the immediate horizon, then politicians are not keen to spend money unless it is on their pet projects where somebody may be persuaded to vote for them. (Cynical aren't I) So when some Alien species starts to destroy whole cities on Earth, nobody was prepared. The only hope is to assemble an assault force, transport it to the target ...
