Cost: USD35
First released: 2001
Output: Louder than any others out there I've tried.
Packaging: See-thru, square box.
Material: Plastic casing holds the medal tip of the stylus.
* This plastic casing can crack, so be gentle...
Compatabilty: Can be used with all other Ortofon cartridges of the same shape as the Scratch cartridges and vise versa.
Shelf life: If you Dj 3 nights/week and don't scratch, they will easily last 1 year. If you scratch, you will get 3-6 months use, out of each stylus.
Application: Just slide onto the tip of the cartridge.
Maintenance: If I see some dust collect on the needle, I simply pick it off carefully with my fingers. If you're hardcore, you can use the mini-brush kit provided with the cartridge in the box-set in comes in.
Feel: Not stiff, but not super-fast either. Most suitable for CLUB DJ's who want high output and superior hold.
* Although this model is called "Scratch" these are not for Dj scratch competitions. Just watch any DMC video and you'll see the Dj use Sure styluses and cartridges. But these styluses really hold the record and for a CLUB DJ, this is essential; too much vibration on the turntables from bass causes the stylus to slide off the record and this happens in some clubs.
This is extreemly imortant because since the Ortofon "scratch" styluses hold so well, you can put less weight on the the turntable arm; keeping the stylus on the record. This means you won't wear out the record as easily (less weight on the turntable arm = less wear on the record) Also, if you put too much weight on the arm, the sound quality will diminish. As I'm sure you know, turning the base of the arm clockwise and counter-clockwise makes the arm go up and down. I would recommend setting it near the bottom (at home) and in the middle (in clubs)
Sound: Again, high output... Good quality sound/wide EQ range/clear
Final note: However, I do NOT use these styluses anymore. If you are not using Serato (DJ sofware) by now, you must be living under a rock... Ortofon has a new "digital" needle/cartridge (also pink colour only) that obviously works better with Serato.
When using Serato, click on "set-up" at top of your screen. You will see a box for each turntable (left and right side) The smaller the (green) circle, the better the quality. More a full list of explanations of different patterns in the box, see the Serato manual.
Light weight, but no need to put coins on the cartridge like Dj do, when using "Sure" and other brands using the same, old flat-headed cartridge design.
