This comes in a cylindrical box with a bit of additional card with the 'bumph' at the side of it. (Hopefully the photo will demonstrate this more clearly).
Inside the box is a small, 8ml little tube. The tube has a sealed cap that is easily 'broken' by twisting the screw top cap, a good idea as it shows that the product has not been used or tampered with.
Once the cap is taken off there is a small transparent, cone-like applicator. The shape and transparency of the applicator has advantages: ~ the transparency of it means that if someone else if administering the drops they can see when the liquid is 'coming'. ~ the shape ensures a closer and more precise application of the drops.
There is also a comprehensive information leaflet enclosed.
■■■ What is it for? ■■■
In short, the active ingredients in these ear drops are aimed at softening hardened ear wax, breaking it down in to small flakes. This in turn can help reduce the necessity for the ears to be syringed.
■■■ Ear Wax ■■■
Little glands in your ear canal produce ear wax in order to aid in the prevention of infection and create lubrication. For the majority of people the wax naturally breaks down and comes out of their ears without noticing.
However for some of us poor souls, too much ear wax is produced, builds up and causes a blockage. As the build up of ear wax continues you tend to get a feeling of the ear being 'full'. Sometimes it can get so bad that it is very painful, cause dizziness and even loss of hearing.
■■■ My Ear Problem ■■■
I had been suffering from different kinds of odd feelings in my ears - hearing ring tones, feeling as if I had lots of water in my ear etc.
Having had my ears checked my GP suggested that there could be a build up of wax and that I should try using these drops.
So I did…..
■■■ How to use it ■■■
I am hopeless when it comes to administering eye drops, I just can put them in. However when it came to using these it was so simple to administer them by myself but I have to say that it is more precise when someone else is looking at the liquid and can see the drops coming out!
Tilt your head to one side, gently squeeze up to 5 drops in to your ear and it really does only need an ever so gentle squeeze otherwise too much comes out.
It is also very hard to tell how many drops you are actually putting in to your ear, unlike eye drops that the person who is administering them, can see and count, when they are going in to your ear they just don't drop out in clear drops.
Be sure to keep your head tilted over for a couple of minutes, otherwise most of the liquid will drip out. You will also need a tissue handy to wipe off any excess when you do put your head upright. Don't worry, it doesn't come pouring out, it just feels a little greasy.
This can be used either once or twice daily, depending on your requirements or what your GP has told you.
■■■ How long did I use it and did it work for me? ■■■
The manufacturers suggest that it should only take 3-4 days for an improvement. I used this for a full week and every so often still use it when I get an underwater feeling in my ears.
I did get some relief from the ear drops but the odd sensation and dull hearing comes back every so often so I just go for the drops.
■■■ Side-effects ■■■
I didn't experience any side-effects but apparently like all medicines and treatments some people can experience the following: ~ whilst the wax expands during treatment there can be distortion of hearing, slight dizziness, impaired balance or tinnitus. ~ an unpleasant taste ~ a temporary bubbling sensation in the ear.

■■■ My Verdict ■■■
This did ease the unpleasant feeling of being under water and odd hearing for a short period of time but it did come back after a few weeks. However my GP doesn't think that the ear wax is sufficient to warrant syringing. Based on this, I therefore don't think that this would be as efficient for someone with a large build of wax - it will loosen it prior to syringing but apparently, so will olive oil, yet to try that remedy!
It worked for me and eased the discomfort but hasn't solved my ear problem! Although it seemed expensive at the time for a little 8ml tube, it has an advantage over any eye drops such as Optrex I have paid roughly the same for. With the eye drops it is recommended that you dispose of the fluid, however with this the expiry date is September 2009 so it's not just a one-off payment for a treatment of 3-4 days!
Not a miracle cure product but relieved my discomfort when I needed it!

***Why Otex? ***
Otex ear drops come in a little 8ml bottle and they use Urea Hydrogen Peroxide to soften ear wax. It does this by releasing oxygen. The Urea contained is used to minimise the amount of a protein called keratin that is found in the wax. This also helps the Hydrogen Peroxide to penetrate. Meanwhile the Hydrogen Peroxide acts as an antiseptic, effectively cleaning out the ear as it breaks ... ...blocked ear wax, I decided Otex would be the only option for me because it was a well known brand and highly recommended by the television! And I'm really, really pleased that I did buy them now. I'd say I saw results on the second day of taking the drops. I could actually feel the drops working instantly though which was really reassuring. Mind you, it's a bit hard not to with your head tilted to one side! ...and opted for Otex. Otex does not come cheap though! I was knocked for 6 when I went in Boots, asked for Otex, and was told to pay £4.39 for a 8ml tube! But, I'm willing to give anything a go once and walked away eager to get home to administer this into my (left) ear.
The tube Otex comes in is white and a light orangey/browny colour. Very apt, as this is, I suppose, the colour of wax. The box it comes in is the same colour. Inside the box are the ... ...nots' is also listed.
Otex is a - and I quote - clear, straw coloured viscous solution. It contains 5% urea hydrogen peroxide which is the active ingredient. The said named active ingredient works by softening the wax and breaking it down into small flakes. Well, that's what they say!

...was until I came across Otex ear drops. To me they are a wonder drug. I’ve tried numerous ear drops but this is the one, which works for me. The packaging claims that they will “reduce the need for syringing” and boy do they ever. As testimony, I can hear the wife’s sweet voice so much clearer and haven’t visited the Doctor’s surgery for about three years. Otex ear drops can be purchased at any Pharmacy (Boots sells it for £4-35). It contains 8-hydroxy-quinoline ... ...into soft flakes, which are then shed naturally. The ear is designed to produce wax but in some unfortunate individuals like me, it can produce too much. The hairs in the ear are supposed to help the passage of the wax out of the ear. One doctor said that people who are blessed with hairy ears will never have wax problems – why not go and check out your partner’s ears now! Anyway, I digress, the easy to squeeze bottle holds 8mls, which doesn’t sound ...

...left ear, so I purchased Otex to try and sort it out.
The first time I put the Otex in, there was considerable fizzing within my ear canal. I saw that the instruction manual said this was normal, so didn't worry. It actually felt kind of good to think that the Otex was working away at the wax.
After day 1, my ear actually felt WORSE than before I put the drops in. However, once again, I read that this can be expected. Therefore, I continued with ... ...I should mention that the Otex made me feel dizzy and dramatically reduced my hearing capabilities.
On day 4, I woke up with considerable pain in my left ear. After seeing my doctor, I had been diagnosed with an EAR CANAL INFECTION. He told me that he was 95% sure it had been caused by the Otex. Basically, your ear wax is there for a reason. It protects the delicate inner ear lining from infection. The dark, moist conditions of the ear canal make ...

...so went out brought some otex put in the drops,put the drops in and heard a fizzing sound but as the instructions said it was fine i didnt worry to much about it .....
The next day i woke up in total agony in my both my ears and had searing pain also in my jaw, went too see my doc and he said i had a very serious ear infection proberly due to using the otex drops.
so instead of just not being able to hear clearly i now have pain in both ears and ...

Ever since I have known him my husband, Dave, has suffered from a build up of wax in his ears. Every so often this becomes so bad that it affects his hearing ? that?s his story anyway! LOL! It also gives him a lot of pain if he leaves it to get too bad. He has been using Otexeardrops about every six weeks to clear the accumulated wax, a process which usually takes a few days of treatment before the ears are finally clear and the pain disappears.
My sister suggested that he try using ear candles ? she and a friend of hers had both used them and both had good results. Dave said that he would like to try them as it would mean that he could clear his ears without actually putting anything into his ears.
