This is an excellent text and one which I studied for my A levels. Excellently written by Shakespeare as usual, Othello is about a black man in a white society, about a domestic tragedy of how a hero falls on his knees and commits murder.
Some of the imagery and tone in this play is excellent, it’s imagery at time is sublime and the final image of Desdemona and Othello lying on a bed re-united in death is excellent.
Iago who plays the evil villain plants the seed of doubt into Othello’s mind and introduces concepts into his mind. Othello is a great man at the beginning, he has heroic qualities but by the end he is reduced to a man who riddled with guilt.
Iago is an exceptional character, who betrays Othello’s trust in lengths so extreme that his motive in the end is questioned. The quote ‘I am not what I am’ personifies his character, and his failure to speak at the end emphasises the villainy of his character.
A great play to read, excellently written and one to recommend………
