Heralding in A New Era With Old Parts

Advantages: Ease of maintenance. Running costs. Quite advanced in many ways
Disadvantages: Strange mixture of old and new ideas. 'Odd' cornering to say the least

...five year old low-ish mileage Triumph Herald 12/50. Lovely it looked too, in that classy royal blue of the day touched off by those white rubber strakes that were the forerunners of today’s plastic bumpers. I’d read up a lot on the subject (yes even before Ciao), and was impressed by the fact that this range of Triumphs, i.e. Heralds, Spitfires and Vitesses all still had a chassis when everyone else had succumbed to monocoque (one piece body) construction. ...
...feeling’ that gave so many Triumph owners 'kittens' when it first happened. I purchased a flexible bar, which was on unofficial add-on to the rear suspension. This discouraged the rear wheels rushing to meet each other without stiffening the ride, and was a vast improvement. Having said that, the relatively soft ride gave back seat passengers a pleasant surprise (at least until you cornered anyway). This handling flaw, with wheels at alarming angles ...

Chocks Away

Advantages: Great fun to drive
Disadvantages: VERY basic motoring

~ ~ Triumph was an old, indigenous UK car manufacturer who later went on to become part of the British Leyland Group of companies, back in the (good old?) days when there was still such a thing as an indigenous UK car manufacturer. They were well made motorcars, and in fact I passed my driving test in an old Triumph Herald 12/50 way back in 1968. Maybe that's why I've always had a wee bit of a soft spot for them. ~ ~ Triumph were also renowned ...
...were probably the Triumph Spitfire, the Triumph GT6, the Triumph Stag, and two later models, the Triumph TR6 and TR7. I owned a Spitfire for a short period in the early 1970's, when I still considered myself a wee bit of a "jack the lad", and wanted to cut a bit of a dash with the ladies. It was a 1969 Mark Two model, with a 1600cc twin-carb engine, which gave it a wee bit more 'poke' than the original Mark One version which was first produced ...

1969 - Great Year For Cars - Triumph GT6 Mark One

Advantages: Classic British Sports Car, Beautiful Shape
Disadvantages: It Has 2600 Electrical Points, Runs On 4* Petrol

...and she is a 1969 Triumph GT6 Mark One, and she lives quite comfortably in the garage of my parents house in Gloucester. Her history is quite chequered... She was built and bought in 1969 and driven for a mere 26000 miles before being dumped in a garage in Cheltenham to gather rust for 16 years before The Pa and I decided that we would buy her. We paid a princely sum of £200 for her and had her transported to our house. She was in a terrible state... ...
...you'd be wrong. The Triumph GT6 mark 3 was used commonly in the Briitsh Police Force and there are several Mark 3's on the Heartbeat show. You will not find a single Mark 1 on there! So there you have it. One of the few mechnical things that I have been lucky and skilled enough to rebuild over the years and something that I can take great pride in. I apologise if this wasn't a review aimed at people intending to buy the car, but simply, people ...

You either love it or you hate it.

Advantages: cheap, good looking, low fuel cost, space
Disadvantages: rusts, a bit old fashoined, brakes

I have had a TR7 for nearly fiteen years now and since the time the price has gone up at the same rate as i am spending money on it meaning that this fabulous car is effectively going to have payed for all its reurns for when the time comes to sell. With this car there are two main advantages from the driving point of view : fantastic amount of space inside, and a massive boot, and an amazing engine whether it it is the v8, the normal four cylinder ...
...it givces a great sound and plenty of power. Unfortunatly there is a down side which is because this is an old car you suffers the normal problems of classic motoring such as at low speed the gear-box and steering whell vibrate alot and the turning is very heavy, and putting up the roof can be an absolute nightmare. But if you are looking for a classic car this is one of the best because of the practicality given by the big doors, boot and things ...

Triumph Stag - a flawed fantasy or fabulous flirtation?

Advantages: The Smile Factor. Beautiful looks. Beautiful noises. Open top. Hard top. WOW!
Disadvantages: Like all 30 year old cars, servicing and maintenance is essential. Never neglect a Stag.

...Giovanni Michelotti developed it for Triumph and management approved it for production. The shape was liked so much that it was grafted on to the sedan range as the Mark II, destined to follow the innovative Stag off the showrooms and into enthusiastic owner's hands. Unfortunately the opposite happened and by the time the Stag was released in 1970, it was a year behind the Saloons. Consequently the impact had been stolen and the Stag appeared as ...
...developed at considerable cost and Triumph corporate pride meant the Rover 3.5 V8 was never going to be installed under the bonnet. Even if the decision to use the (ex-Buick) Rover had been forced on Triumph, it is unlikely that enough engines (around 12,000 a year estimated) would have been available with production being fully allocated to Rover sedans, Range Rovers, Land Rovers and a number of specialists car builders taking the overflow capacity. ...
