I live and work in an area of exceptionally hard water. So much so, that, if I was trying to make you understand the hardness I would say it was like concrete, if you see what I mean. We had a water softener fitted to our hot water pipes, that lead in and out of our boiler, and we have used a water filter jug for years for our drinking water. Despite the fact that the filtered water tastes much better, and is less limey, it still does leave more lime-scale in our kettle than is I would like. This not only can affect the taste of the water but ultimately shorten the lifespan of your kettle.

CLEANING YOUR ELECTRIC KETTLE. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Half fill your kettle and put it on to boil.
When the water has boiled stand the kettle in your sink, cut open the Oust sachet and pour the contents into your kettle.
Do not overfill with water as when you add the Oust the contents of your kettle will foam up and may bubble over or splash you. I never hold my hands too near when pouring the Oust into the kettle.
You simply leave the contents to soak for ten minutes and carefully pour away.
(If any scale remains, do not pour the solution away but reheat the it, until it begins to fizz. Do not let it boil)
Re-fill the kettle and boil.
Pour this away also and rinse the kettle thoroughly.
If you want to be cautious you could boil, pour away and rinse a few times.
The directions are similar for steam irons and coffee makers, however they are a little different for shower heads. You need to remove the head from its lead and place it upside down in a jug. The Oust sachet is emptied into this jug and enough hot water is then poured over, to cover the showerhead. The water must not be too hot as, if there are any plastic parts they may warp. Other than that it is just a matter of leaving ten minutes, rinsing thoroughly and reassembling.
ANY GOOD ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pack claims to contain new and improved Oust which removes 20% more lime-scale than previously. I find the results exceptionally good on my kettle but bear in mind I use a water filter and do clean the kettle on a regular basis. I find that if I clean it about every 3 months it is fine. The aluminium comes up all shiny and new.
When you first pour the Oust into the hot water in the kettle there is a very strong chemical smell and I wonder if it may be harmful for anyone with chest problems.
I cannot comment on the result on coffee makers and steam irons but assume they must be as good. What I like is that the kettle is cleaned in ten minutes so if I do it when I am changing and cleaning my water filter in the jug everything is easily cleaned together.
I am always apprehensive with strong products such as this. However the sachets are very tough and should be safe around children. When I cut open a sachet I have as little contact as possible and try to dispose of it in my dustbin instantly, after use.
The product is an irritant and has many cautions on the pack. It is recommended that you use eye/face protection so be warned. However up to now I have had no problems and this product works which is good.
Advantages: cheap enough Disadvantages: doesn't work for long
...one available in Morrissons was Oust all purpose. It claims to remove limescale from kettles irons and shower heads. It had to be worth a go at £1.39 and it contains three 25 ml sachets.
The instructions were simple enough. The product is supplied in three see through sachets. You are required to open one and place in a pre boiled kettle which has been half filled with water. The solution will fizz and do it's work. After ten minutes it claims to ... ...and sure enough after ten minutes of watching the fizz bubble up in the water doing its magic, the bottom of the kettle was clear of limescale and back to shining instead of crusty looking.
My other half was so impressed he kept showing me the bottom of the kettle. The first thing I noticed after the shining steel however was the stench coming from the kettle. I insisted he rinse and boil with fresh water to get rid of any smells. He did insist ...

Advantages: A capable limescale remover Disadvantages: None
Oust All Purpose Descaler is one of those products that I always have to hand. Our water is between medium and hard, I recently used a test strip to check our water status and when the strip was dipped into a mug of cold water three out of four small squares along the strip turned colour indicating that we are in a medium to hard water area.
Both of us have a `thing` about scale being allowed to build up in the kettle, often before we refill the ... ...You get three sachets of Oust All Purpose Descaler in one box and it is easy to use.
First of all you need to put some water in the kettle, about half full is fine and then bring the water to the boil. The next step is to unplug the kettle and put it on a surface where the descaler can't do any harm if you spill it, I use the draining board. Then open just one of the sachets and pour it into the semi-cooled water.
Leave the Oust Descaler for ten ...

I was recommend this product by a family member when we moved into a very hard water area. I was forever trying to clean the inside of my kettle but without any real luck. I finally found this product in our local Wilkinsons store and was very suprised when it was only £1.79 for the packet. Not really taking much notice of the packet until I got home i was further suprised when I found it contained 3 sachets.

The packet is blue in colour with a picture of a kettle, iron and coffree maker on the front and the product name. The reverse of the packet is white with all of the directions for using it and the contents.

...happened, and picked up some Oust All Purpose Descaler . The box came with three sachets of the descaler, and it was so easy to use . All I had to do was half fill my kettle, bring it to the boil, and then leave it to cool down a little . Then I had to unplug the kettle , and pour one sachet of descaler into the kettle, and leave it to work for ten minutes. Except that I left it for 20, because I got distracted by a magazine. When I eventually remembered, ... ...to see all the bits of limescale going down the plughole. There seemed to be loads of it coming out, and it was great watching it drain away, because I could physically see the grot that had been removed .I then looked inside the kettle, and it looked brand new - the previously dull, white, scale caked element was shiny and glistening, the mesh filter was un-clogged, and the kettle just looked incredibly clean . Of course, you need to rinse the kettle ...

Advantages: Removes all scale, does the job very quickly Disadvantages: Strong chemical smell
I bought this product from my local tesco store as they had run out of my usual de-scaler product. It was a reasonable price, at around £1.30 for a box containing three sachets of the product (i.e. three treatments).
I used this for my kettle, which had a coating of scale on the bottom of the inside. This product can also be used for irons and coffee makers. I simply half filled the kettle, boiled the water and then added one sachet to this (over ... ...the instruction to carry out over a sink!). This was left for the required time - 3 minutes. When I returned, the scale had completely disappeared, the second stage of re-boiling the kettle was not even required. After a thorough rinse with clean water, the kettle was ready to use again, and the tea has never tasted better!!
I liked that this product was a liquid rather than the powder or granuled that I had been using and this seemed to work faster. ...
