Oust All Purpose Descaler is one of those products that I always have to hand. Our water is between medium and hard, I recently used a test strip to check our water status and when the strip was dipped into a mug of cold water three out of four small squares along the strip turned colour indicating that we are in a medium to hard water area.
Both of us have a `thing` about scale being allowed to build up in the kettle, often before we refill the kettle we will rinse it out with copious amounts of cold water to rid the kettle of any sediment. It is alarming how quickly the scale builds up, it seems to gather around the element and it looks really murky. There would be nothing more off-putting than making a good cuppa and finding that you were drinking scale particles.
You get three sachets of Oust All Purpose Descaler in one box and it is easy to use. First of all you need to put some water in the kettle, about half full is fine and then bring the water to the boil. The next step is to unplug the kettle and put it on a surface where the descaler can't do any harm if you spill it, I use the draining board. Then open just one of the sachets and pour it into the semi-cooled water. Leave the Oust Descaler for ten minutes, that gives it plenty of time to work. After the ten minutes is up you should find that the scale has loosened and is floating about inside of the kettle. If you watch as you pour the solution down the sink you will see the scale floating in it and I am sure that you will be surprised at how much is there. Of course you need to make sure that all traces of the Oust descaler are cleaned away, so rinse the kettle thoroughly with cold water and then refill it with water and bring it to the boil. Once it has boiled then tip the water out again and do one final cold rinse.
The first thing that I always notice is the difference that the Oust makes to the element, whereas before use the element was furred and dull it usually ends up shiny and bright. Any scale that may have had a chance to build up has vanished.
If you have let the inside of your kettle become really `scaled up` then you just may need to repeat the process. You do not need to use a second sachet ! When the Oust descaler has been given its ten minutes to work you will naturally check it to see what impact the descaler has had. If you then notice that there is still scale inside of your kettle then plug the kettle back in ( making sure that the kettle and plug are totally dry ) and let the water heat up again until it goes frothy. Unless you have a heavy build up then you will not need to go to this extent.
I descale our kettle every couple of months, after eight weeks it needs to be done. Once you have descaled you are confident that your kettle is at its best. Oust does not have too strong an odour but I am always careful to not to splash it onto my skin. The instructions on the packet have all the normal warnings for such a product.
Oust All Purpose Descaler is recommended for use in coffee makers, though I have never used it in one. You can also descale your steam iron using Oust and your shower head too. Oust is suitable for both stainless steel and plastic, I have only ever used it on plastic and I can vouch that it does the job admirably.
It is possible to buy a single sachet of Oust descaler and you can also buy a 250 ml bottle of liquid Oust. A pack of three 25 ml sachets will cost you in the region of £1.75. Oust All Purpose descaler is available in many supermarkets and hardware stores. If scale is allowed to build then your appliances will have a shorter lifespan, it is far easier and cheaper to descale instead.
