In the summer of 2006 my husband and I decided to down-grade our car from a comfortable, smart, new-ish Volkswagen Passat to a rusty, no-frills, scruffy, old Ford Fiesta. We did it for several reasons, mainly economical (we got the car for £60!!!), and my husband is a mechanic so no car is beyond repair.
When we got the car in the garage to give it a clean it was clear to see that the previous owners were dog-lovers and had allowed their pooch to run a riot in the back seats. Apart from the clumps of canine hair and remnants of saliva drool on the plastic interior, there was a distinct and unpleasant odour that was unmistakably wet-dog. Now don't get me wrong, I like dogs, though at a distance. I am not a dog lover and the smell they leave behind on soft furnishings repulses me. I wasn't too worried as I thought these problems would go after cleaning the car. After much hoovering, cleaning, polishing and replacing the seats (which we had donated to us from a fiesta that had been written off!) the interior was a lot better; the hair was gone, the plastic was clean, but one thing remained...the awful smell.
We tried to clean everything again, used a fabric refresher and drove around with the windows wide open, but despite our best efforts the smell lingered. I had seen 'Oust' advertised on the TV, which was an odour eliminator product which promised to do something regular air fresheners couldn't: remove the odour rather than simply mask it. I decided that this was our last hope, as I was concerned the doggy-smell would start to linger on our clothes or that other people wouldn't want to ride in our car.
Available in all supermarkets, prices range from £1.60 - £1.99 for a 300ml can. I ot mine from Tesco for the latter price, which is still quite inexpensive. Oust is a product from the S.C Johnson company and this particular product won the prestigious 'Product Of The Year 2006', which is a good endorsement.
It is available in four varieties: Outdoor Scent (has a green top), Citrus Scent (has a yellow top), Garden Fresh (has a magenta top) and Fragrance Free. It is also available in four formats: aerosol spray, mini spray, portable fan and electric diffuser. This is quite a varied and impressive product range and offers something to suit most preferences, which is good.
I decided to go for the green-top Outdoor Fresh, as this sounded fresher and more subtle than the other varieties, and in the aerosol spray, due to the fact it was for use in the car. the aerosol can is a metal canister with a plastic top, about 6 inches long. The can is white with a green top and has the 'Oust' brand name written diagonally across the top half of the bottle in dark blue small case letters. Above the brand name is a picture of a green, luscious valley with a river running through the centre, surrounded by pink flowers, meadows and trees. It looks nice and quite unusual for this type of product. Under the brand name it says 'Odour Eliminator' in dark blue letters (it doesn't seem to class itself in the same category as an air freshener) and underneath this reads the caption: "Eliminates odours without just masking". This is the very thing that attracted me to this product rather than a standard air freshener. I hate air fresheners because they fill the air with chemicals and synthetic smells which end up mixing with the odour and creating a worse smell than before. I didn't fancy pine-dog fresh! Under this the canister proudly displays the red 'Product Of The Year' banner it achieved, and next to this is the fragrance variety; in this case the words 'Outdoor Scent', accompanied by an image of a grren leaf. The company logo sits under this in navy blue and white. Although I quite like the packaging and design it looks a bit messy, as though a small child designed it.
The back of the canister has the same valley/meadow scene and 'Oust' brand name in blue. Under this it has the same caption, but in small, normal font. Under this is a box outlined in blue which contains safety information and the 'Extremely Flammable' sign. It has the usual cautions listed (do not pierce pressurised containers, etc.) and company address. Under the safety information is a bit about the properties of this product and directions for use. It claims that the special formula neutralises bad odour molecules in the air, such as pet (yes!), bathroom, smoke and musty/mildew odours, leaving the air smelling clean and fresh. It was music to my ears, so as soon as I got it into the car I shook the can, ready to release the outdoor freshness...
To release the spray you simply press down on the button located in the centre of the lid. The spray is released from the tiny outlet just above this button, though far enough away to avoid soaking your finger. It is easy to handle and spray and doesn't have a separate lid. I like these type of spray outlets as they rarely clog and you don't end up loosing the lid because the lid and the outlet are one unit. This is not so good for people with young children, who may find it easier to spray, though I guess it is up to the parent to make sure it isn't in their reach.
The directions for use advise to shake the can first and then point it towards the centre of the room and spray. I did this and sprayed...
I was suprised to find that the doggy odour quickly muted in its potency, and after another couple of sprays I couldn't smell it at all. Instead I could smell a pleasant, fresh, clean, slightly perfumed yet subtle aroma. It doesn't smell like the outdoors, neither did I really expect it to. If I'd wanted that I would have just left the door open! I chose this fragrance because I knew it was the best way to describe a fresh, clean smell. I liked it because of its subtlety and unintrusiveness; it wasn't so over-powering that it left me with a headache but the most important quality is that it didn't mask the odour as it had promised not to do. I was impressed by this, and a little suprised that it had done so, and felt pleased about the fact I wasn't left with the usual juxtaposed smells.
We decided to leave the rest in the car, just incase we needed to spray it again. Although much improved, the smell hadn't completely disappeared. I used it again everythime we took a journey until the smell had completely gone, which was about five more times. I expected this and was not disappointed as I knew the smell was probably also ingrained in the carpet. An important point to mention here is that this product is not for use on fabric, unlike some of the others currently on the market. I don't consider this a product disadvantage as it doesn't advertise this as a property.
Now I use it in the house to eliminate kitchen odours that drift into the lounge. It really is effective on these odours and they don't return...instead your home is left smelling clean and fresh. It even works on strong fishy odours, which are notouriously difficult to shift. I also use it to freshen the rooms in my general housework routine, and as a quick burst of fragrance before friends arrive for a visit, etc.. People always comment on how nice it smells and ask what freshener I use, which speaks volumes.
The mist that is released is quite dry and doesn't fall to the floor quickly. It doesn't leave a damp or sticky residue on furniture either, which is unusual for an aerosol product.
I have been really impressed with this product, and it's really good for quick odour removal. However, the obvious disadvantage is that it is full of artificial chemicals that you inevitable end up inhailing. This can not be healthy nor beneficial to the environment. My preferred method of fragrancing my own home is to ventilate it naturally with open windows, and freshen naturally with fresh-cut flowers and pot-pourii. This smells much nicer and doesn't pollute the air. It's natural and gives a more constant, longer-lasting result. This is especially important for children and asthma sufferers. I will still use Oust, though it's the only one I really like and I will only use it for immediate removal of really unpleasant odours. I recommend this product on that kind of basis, though if the health/environment issue doesn't bother you, you may find that this is the perfect odour eliminator for you. It's cheap, though due to the nature of the product it doesn't necessarily last that long. I will always owe Oust my gratitude for removing the awful pooch pong that almost made us scrap the car! A very good, effective product.
...is where my need for Oust came in. I'm quite happy to embarrass my husband and say that he is the cause of all the problems creating man sized smells! I saw the Oust mini spray advertised on the t'v, I'm not usually one for buying into advertising but normal air fresheners weren't helping make my bathroom a more pleasant place so I thought it would be worth a try. I added the minispray to my shopping list and picked it up on my next grocery trip.
... ...couldn't personally tell you how Oust works so i'll let the company do it for me-
"As Oust® Air Cleaner is sprayed, a fine mist of formulated droplets are dispersed. The dispersed droplets begin to dissolve the malodour compounds present in the air. The dissolved odour molecules then condense with one another to form larger droplets. These larger droplets, which are heavier than air particles, fall to the ground carrying the odours with them. " ...

...gave us headaches, but the Oust aerosol spray remains an important part of our family life.
Why? Well, quite simply, it works. I chose it after seeing the adverts on t.v. and agreed that I would rather rid my home of the smell than just cover it up. Here's the science bit (always wanted to say that):
"Immediately after spraying, Oust® Air Sanitizer attaches to odor-causing bacteria in the air. After exposure, bacteria die and are carried out of ... ...I presume is the real Oust smell, but reminds me of hairspray! I'm not worried about the fragrance, it's the one I'm trying to get rid of I worry about! Advantages: Better than most air fresheners I've tried Disadvantages: Doesn't completely eliminate odours
...Available in 300ml aerosol cans Oust comes in 3 scents - Fresh, Garden Fresh and Citrus/Clean scent. Bright and colourful cans with an easy to use spray top with no lid to lose. Oust claims to eliminate everyday odours such as pets, smoke, cooking, bathroom etc. claiming that other air fresheners only mask these smells.
==Does it Work?==
The first time I used Oust was after I had heated some mackerel in the microwave so you can imagine how bad ... ...was needed. I find Oust has quite a strong unique smell, an outdoor fresh smell, not flowery like so many other fresheners. It certainly did cover up the smell of the mackerel, making it a bit more acceptable, but I wouldn't say it eliminated it completely, although perhaps mackerel is a bit of a tough test. I do find the fragrance lingers for quite a while, again longer than most of the others I have tried.
Obviously care should always be taken ...

that it seems to be a good product which lives up to the manufacturers claims. It easily eliminated smells left by hubby's socks, sons clothes and the dog odours. It didn't remove completely husbands hobby smells but did reduce them to a bare minimum which was easily removed by opening the windows for a while.
