I was taking Cilest for quite a while but started developing bad stomach cramps each month, put on about a stone in weight (not that that’s a bad thing for me) and started getting really over emotional and stressed at the time of the month. As this pill had become unsuitable for me I changed a couple of times before settling with Ovranette.
WHAT IS OVRANETTE?
Ovranette is a 21-day pack of oral contraceptive pills. Each pill contains 150mg levonorgestrel and 30mg ethinylestradiol. They are small, beige, sugar coated pills so they are extremely easy to swallow.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
This pill contains an oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and a progestogen (levonorgestrel): hormones which stop the ovary from releasing an egg each month. They thicken the fluid in the neck of the womb to make it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. In addition to this they alter the lining of the womb to make it less likely to accept a fertilised egg.
To enable it to work in this way you must take a pill from the pack at roughly the same time each day (eg. before bed). A couple of days after you’ve completed the 21 pill pack you’ll have your period. Regardless of whether you’re still bleeding or not, you start taking the next pack on the same day as you started the last pack (eg. Monday).
I shan’t go through all the medical warnings because your doctor will ask you many questions before prescribing you this, and take your blood pressure. The leaflet that comes with the pills covers EVERYTHING so I’ll get onto my personal experience with this pill….
MY EXPERIENCE
I find that if I ever get any problems with my pill they always occur in the few days before my period (just before the end of the 21-day pack). With previous pills I have experienced physical side effects like headaches and stomach cramps but never really had a too big a problem with emotions.
When I had almost completed the first 21 pill pack of Ovranette I began to feel nauseous every evening which put me off eating my dinner until later. In addition to this I would also start to feel ridiculously over-emotional: I could just be sitting around watching TV and then just feel like crying, or chatting to my boyfriend and then get upset by something he'd said which wouldn't normally bother me - and it wasn't just a little sob; when I started crying it could go on for ages because I just felt THAT bad! And it wasn’t just little outbursts I would have; I’d feel really depressed for about a week and a half/two weeks.
If that wasn’t enough, every time my period loomed I would develop several spots and an oil slick on my forehead! I also experienced a couple of really big painful spots just by my hairline on my forehead which I had never had before; so this put me off this pill even more.
On the plus side I did find that my periods were EXTREMELY light and came like clockwork; I would finish my pack of pills on a Friday and I’d come on between 10 and 11 on Tuesday morning. My periods barely lasted three days and were so light I could almost forget I was on. However, a light period is little compensation when you feel depressed for the best part of two weeks.
I thought I'd give it a little chance to settle in before quitting but after three months of feeling like I had hit rock bottom each time I had my period I thought enough was enough and changed pills again!
SO IN CONCLUSION....
** ADVANTAGES - Very light 3 day periods - Periods like clockwork - No bloating/weight gain - No pregnancy
** DISADVANTAGES - Emotional see-saw every month - Nausea - Painful spots/oil slick skin - Occasional loss of appetite
If you are on this pill or have been prescribed it, don't worry about the side effects I have mentioned as different pills suit different people - it could be your perfect partner. However, if you’re already on it and are experiencing any of these things I’ve mentioned, bear in mind that it could be your pill causing this and keep an eye on the situation.
I'll be sad to see my light 3-day period go, but I just couldn't put up with the other crap - this one's definitely NOT for me!
Advantages: Lighter, shorter and much less painful periods Disadvantages: May become ineffective with the use of antibiotics or illness
...do tablets very well, but Ovranette is a minute yellow pill (about the size of a skittle - that's the sweet, not the ten pin bowling variety!) It contains 150mcg of levonorgestrel (which is a progestogen) and 30mcg of ethinylestradiol (which is an oestrogen). Now, I haven't really the foggiest what this means in technical terms, but I'm assured by my doctor that it's about the safest contraceptive you can use for any length of time and has low levels ... ...The other benefit of Ovranette (if we are to trust the medical professionals) is that no one has ever suggested that I need to take a break from this pill, even when I asked my doctor if I should. I'm sure my body would benefit from a rest from the extra hormones, but the doctors I have spoken to have assured me that the likelihood of it doing me any harm is very slim. I'm hoping they know better than me.
So it stops us from getting pregnant, helps ...

Advantages: Easy to take, highly effective, few side effects. Disadvantages: None if it's the right pill for you.
I would highly recommend Ovranette to any female who a)wants highly effective prevention of pregnancy and b)has problems with infrequent, heavy or painful periods. Ovranette is the perfect solution for women, such as myself, who have no history in their family of high blood pressure or heart attacks, and is, as long as you have a fairly good memory, easy to take and has few side effects. I can probably best describe Ovranettes main effects on the ... ...my boyfriend and started taking Ovranette (on my doctor's advice of course), mostly to prevent pregnancy, but also to regulate my menstrual cycle. It made a massive difference on my life in both respects. My periods were regulated by these pills (taken every day for 21 days and then a 7 day break in which your period will occur) so that I can now predict down to the day and even time of day when my period will begin, which means I can always plan ...

I had been on Dianette for a long time and got on with it very well. Following my bad experience with Cilest I wan't that keen to swap again, but my doctor persuaded me that it would be beneficial and chose Ovranette as a good alternative. The only side affect has been the slight increase on spots on my face and neck, which I was expecting. The nurse asked me about my medical history and took my blood pressure before prescribing me with Ovranette. There are quite a lot of reasons why Ovranette may not be suitable for some women, but the nurse will go through these with you. Ovranette is free on prescription from the NHS. ...Pill:
As a contraceptive pill, Ovranette has been around for quite a while and is probably a little out of date against its competitors now. It was first recommened to me when I began university at 18 as one of the best ways to help prevent pregnancy.
Advantages:

I had been on Ovranette for about 6 months when I noticed just how much weight I had started to put on. The following months, I noticed no change, in fact if anything I started to put more and more weight on. Throughout a year and a half on the pill I put on 3 stone. Now I'm not saying that this is all do to Ovranette, ...

The Mirena is different from other IUDs, as it is a hormonal coil. It delivers 20mg of levonorgestrel (a progesterone hormone) directly to the uterus. This is the same hormone that you would find in the contraceptivepills Ovran 30, Microgynon, Eugynon, Ovranette and Trinordial.
It is a T shaped piece of plastic, with a thicker down piece than other IUDs, which is where the hormone sits. The Mirena works in two ways. It thickens the cervical mucous making it difficult for the sperm to swim, so they can't get through! It also thins the lining of the womb, which prevents implantation. So, if some little blighter does fight his way through he is still scuppered! In a few women the Mirena will also suppress ovulation. Sounds good, eh?
There are fewer side effects as the hormone is pumped directly into the lining ...
