Everyone I know (almost) owns one of these book. Universally known as "The little yellow book", this little gem is one of the most useful things I possess.
Published by the Oxford University Press, this small volume is just the right size to fit in the pocket of a white coat, or in a bag. It is covered in a plastic coating, which is fairly long lasting, although mine has started to split along the spine from being too well-thumbed. It also has some ribbons attached to the spine to bookmark your favourite pages.
The layout of the book is simple and clear. Following a short introduction and list of abbreviations, (and in the newer editions some pictures of clinical signs), each chapter covers one clinical discipline, such as infectious diseases and renal medicine. There are also chapters on surgery (mainly aimed at the medical management of surgical patients, and therefore more appropriate to the Houseman than to the career Surgeon).
Every chapter has a similar layout, starting with a contents page, and then following with one or two topics to a page. Most of the information is printed on the pages on the left side, with the opposite page being blank so you can fill it with your own notes. The information is clearly organised, under headings such as Presentation, Differential Diagnosis, Treatment, Prognosis, and Follow-up, and is often given in note form, to save space. The print is small but clear and easily read. Each chapter is marked with a coloured tab at the edge which makes things easy to locate.
This book is aimed very much at the practical management of patients in the clinical situation, and therefore contains little background detail or theory. It gives succinct details of the important points in the diagnosis and management of nearly everything you are likely to encounter in the field of Medicine, listing which tests to do, signs to look for, and the basis of the treatment. As a quick reference on the ward it is invaluable.
In summary, this is one of the most useful books you can own if you are involved in the day-to-day management of patients and conditions. It will be particularly relevant to Junior Doctors, GPs, Medical Students, and may also have some relevance in the other health-care disciplines (nursing, physiotherapy and so on). Along with its sister volume, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties ("the little Blue book"), there are few situations that it does not cover. Get it! Now!
